Mr. Adhikari served as executive director of The Times of India and was a senior consultant at the World Bank. He was a resident fellow at Harvard University's Shorenstein Center for Press, Politics, and Public Policy (1987-89) and a Shapiro Fellow at George Washington University's School for Media and Public Affairs (1998). In 1998-99, Mr. Adhikari was project director of the NED's new global initiative, the World Movement for Democracy. His publications include Press Councils: The Indian Experience (New Delhi, 1971) and India: The First 50 Years (editor, London, 1997). A graduate in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan, Mr. Bharat Ram started his career in 1967 with the Delhi Cloth and General Mills Limited (now DCM Limited). In 1971, he came to be associated with SRF Limited, a company promoted by the DCM Group for manufacturing nylon tyrecord. He was appointed managing director of the company in 1975 and vice chairman in 1988. In the past, as the president of the Association of Synthetic Fibre Industry, chairman of the Indo-Korea Joint Business Council, and the chairman of CII for the Northern Region, Mr. Bharat Ram has made a significant contribution to improve the business environment in India. He is a trained and accomplished sitar player, and is also closely associated with the educational and cultural organizations started by his family. She has also reported and consulted for 60 Minutes (CBS), NBC News with Tom Brokaw, Dateline (NBC), and the PBS human rights program "Rights and Wrongs." With a mandate from the university's leadership, she founded the Journalism and Media Studies Centre in September 1999. Chan was a Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University, and a 1997-98 Freedom Forum Media Studies Center fellow in New York City. She has taught at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University and has written for Hong Kong and U.S. publications, including The Nation magazine, the Village Voice, The Media Studies Journal, The Nieman Report, Ming Pao, The Hong Kong Economic Journal, and Yazhou Zhoukan (and Asia Weekly). He served as correspondent, a foreign news editor, and bureau chief in Phnom Penh (1988-89) and Vietnam (1990-92) before becoming executive editor of The Nation in 1996. He has also served in the ASEAN Secretariat as a special assistant to the Secretary General, and has been a Jefferson Fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii; a Visiting Fellow at the University of Oxford; and chairman of the Southeast Asian Press Alliance. Chua has been the training director of the Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism and a regular writer for "i", a quarterly investigative reporting magazine, since 1995. She is also a professorial lecturer at the University of the Philippines, where she teaches journalism. Yvonne and her colleagues at the Philippine Center for Investigative Reports won the first prize in this year's Jaime V. Ongpin Awards for Investigative Journalism for their series of report on former President Estrada and his wealth and abuse of power. Yvonne was also last year's winner for her report on corruption in the textbook procurement. Her book, "Robbed: An Investigation on Corruption in Philippine Education," won the National Book Awards for Journalism last year. Yvonne began her journalistic career in 1981 as a reporter of the Philippines Daily Express. In 1985, one year before the EDSA revolution, she joined the news desk of the then alternative newspaper, Ang Pahayagang Malaya. By the time she left the paper in 1994, she was the managing editor. Aside from "Robbed," Yvonne is co-author and editor of the book titled The Electronic Trail: Computer-assisted Research and Reporting in the Philippines, and editor of Uncovering the Beat: The Real-world Guide to Reporting on Government. She co-wrote the chapter on corruption in the Bureau of Immigration in the book, Porks and Other Perks: Corruption and Governance in the Philippines and a chapter on fiscal administration in the book Investigating Local Governments. Yvonne obtained her AB Journalism degree from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City in 1981. She was a Jefferson Fellow at the East-West Center in Hawaii and Marshall McLuhan Fellow in Canada. Since 1963, he has experience in industry associations, and has been involved in supporting and promoting industry in its interaction with government, and developing trade and business links internationally. Currently, he is director general of the Confederation of Indian Industry, a national organization with direct membership of 3,800 companies, servicing and representing Indian Industry. CII provides information, advisory and consultative services to both government and industry, and promotes joint ventures, technology transfer and trade. Mr. Das is also chairman of the Associated Cement Companies. His research is on Indian political development since independence, and particularly the democratic structures of India. He worked with dissident movements in Central Europe in the 1980s and with race equality groups in the UK. He was an elected member of the London Council in the 1980s, and chairman of the committee on post-school and higher education. He was also the founding chief executive of the Central European University. After running international and external programmes for Oxford University, he now runs the Europaeum, an association of European universities. Mr. Jaitley has been practicing law before the Supreme Court and several High Courts in India since 1977. He was designated senior advocate in 1990. He was the Additional Solicitor General of India for the government of India in the year 1990. He has authored several write-ups on legal and current affairs. Shri Jaitley has been a member of the National Executive of the Bharatiya Janta Party since 1991. He also represents his party as a spokesperson on various forums, and was elected a member of parliament (Rajya Sabha) from Gujarat. He spent four years as a Hong Kong-based freelance journalist, traveling extensively around Asia and covering the Gulf War from Baghdad. He was appointed special issues editor for The Sun in 1994 and also wrote a weekly column, "Thursday with Steven Gan," where he had to frequently battle the paper's internal censors. In 1996, Gan was adopted by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience after he was arrested at the Asia Pacific Conference on East Timor (Apcet II); he was released after five days in prison. His last column on the Apcet II fracas was spiked by the editor and he resigned from the paper in protest soon after. He joined The Nation in Bangkok and was one of the newspaper's editorial writers for two years before co-founding Malaysiakini with Premesh Chandran.
