VIN WEBER & CARL GERSHMAN

We bring you warm greetings on behalf of the National Endowment for Democracy, partners with the Confederation of Indian Industry in the Asian Center for Democratic Governance. The theme of your conference, "Strengthening Democratic Governance," could not be more timely, and the topics chosen for discussion-namely managing conflict, fighting corruption, and enhancing the role of women-are integral to making democracy work more effectively.

You meet at a critical time, when democratic progress has slowed in many parts of the world. In the South Asian region in particular, the difficult challenges of governance must be addressed in the present context of international conflict and sectarian violence that lend a special urgency to this conference. We are confident that it will reinforce a sense of common purpose in meeting these challenges on a regional basis, and we look forward to sharing the insights that emerge from the presentations and discussions here with the networks of democratic practitioners and activists who are looking to strengthen governance in other parts of the world.

We congratulate our colleagues at the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute and the Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry for hosting this conference and for helping to highlight the experience of Bangladesh, which today is an important member of the network of democracies in Asia.
