Balkan Investigative Reporting Network Regional (BIRN)

To continue fostering investigative journalism in Albania, BIRN will conduct on-the-job training, organize specialized workshops, and provide editorial mentorship to raise the professional skills of 15 journalists to produce 24 high-quality investigative reports, articles and analyses on key issues in Albania, thereby increasing objective coverage of political, economic, and social issues of importance to the country’s reform process.
Center for International Private Enterprise

To enhance the capacity of business associations and to strengthen the business community’s role as an agent of change in a democratic society. CIPE will conduct an assessment of Albanian business associations and design and implement a training program targeted at building participating organizations into strong membership-based, service-oriented institutions capable of advocating for pro-business reforms.
Center for Public Information Issues

To promote the transparency of government decision-making processes by monitoring the publication of laws and other governmental acts in the Official Journal of the Republic of Albania. The Center will research, identify and publicize official acts that have been issued, but not published by leading state institutions. The Center will use this information to raise awareness among citizens about the way decisions are made by appointed government officials.
European Movement in Albania (EMA)

To encourage youth activism and participation in Albania’s May 2011 local elections. EMA will conduct a civic education program on local government for students in three municipalities, and organize internships with local government offices for up to 10 high school and college students. EMA will also conduct a countrywide, nonpartisan media campaign encouraging greater voter turnout among youth.
MJAFT! Movement

To continue producing independent, objective radio programs encouraging debate on crucial issues facing the citizens of Albania, especially youth. MJAFT’s station RadioAktive will offer a series of nonpartisan information and debate programs on the political and social situation in the country, and will promote youth participation in Albania’s May 2011 local elections.
National Democratic Institute for International Affairs

To promote the greater political participation and inclusion of women in leadership positions within political parties in Albania. NDI will assist in developing stronger women’s party forums and building the skills of women politicians. NDI will also continue to support the women’s civil society network, Equality in Decision Making, and help it to improve its organizational capacities and advocate for increased numbers of women candidates in the May 2011 local elections.
Youth in Free Initiative (YFI)
$35,900
To promote youth civic participation in northern Albania through capacity building workshops and networking activities. Working in all three districts of the Kukes region, including rural areas, YFI will organize trainings to encourage young people to become more active in their communities, raise awareness about regional initiatives involving youth, and facilitate local youth advocacy campaigns.
