Chidi NwosuNED grantee brutally murdered in Nigeria 
Democracy advocate and long-time NED grantee Chidi Nwosu (left) was murdered on December 28 in his home in the city of Aba, southeastern Nigeria. His murder has been linked to his efforts to expose corruption and transparency in Nigeria. Chidi was the head of the Human Rights, Justice and Peace Foundation. more

A NED-supported organizing campaign successfully brought together hotel workers and owners in an agreement that will improve working conditions and guarantee worker rights under existing labor law. more
 

China 

Chinese democracy advocates have lost two prominent leaders: writer and cyber-dissident Zhang Jianhong (aka Li Hong), and veteran democracy activist Szeto Wah. In 2008, Zhang was honored in absentia with NED's democracy award. Serving a six-year prison sentence since 2007, Zhang was repeatedly denied medical parole until it was too late to treat the severe neurological disorder that claimed his life. Based in Hong Kong, Szeto Wah was a tireless campaigner for the victims of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. more
