Fondation Espoir training session
Haiti: NED grantees facilitate peaceful elections
NED grantees played an important role in facilitating Haiti's peaceful run-off elections in March. Grantees like Fondation Espoir led the way with their innovative use of SMS and web platforms to educate voters and bring citizens into the process of monitoring polling stations across the country. more 

NED Vice President for Programs Georges Fauriol spoke at the University of Central Florida about the ongoing transition in Haiti as well as democratic developments in North Africa and the Middle East. more

Maina KiaiUN Human Rights Council 
Maina Kiai, formerly of NED grantee the Kenya Human Rights Commission, and currently a World Movement for Democracy Steering Committee member, has been appointed as the Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Peaceful Assembly and of Association for the UN Human Rights Council. more  

Chouchou NamegabeDemocratic Republic of Congo
The courage of radio journalist Chouchou Namegabe of NED grantee The Association des Femmes des Medias du Sud Kivu was recognized by Mellanne Verveer, the US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women's Issues. more
  
Nigeria
The National Democratic Institute (NDI), one of NED's core grantees, worked with another NED grantee, Youngstars Foundation in Nigeria, to produce "My Vote Fit Change Naija," a video story promoting voter participation in Nigeria's upcoming elections. more

 

NED grantee Youth Action Initiative Africa successfully organized a youth conference on non-violence and peaceful elections ahead of Nigeria's 2011 elections. more

  

Mexico  

NED grantee The Centro de Derechose Humanos de las Mujeres (Center for Women's Human Rights) will receive the 2011 Hermila Galindo prize for its work in promoting a culture of respect for the human rights of women. more

  
Yang JianliChina 
Yang Jianli of NED grantee Initiatives for China had his testimony before the UN Human Rights Council interrupted by Chinese government officials. Dr. Yang was only allowed to finish his address after the US delegate intervened to defend his right to speak. more
