World Press Freedom Day 2011 
The Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA) partnered with UNESCO to help organize the three-day conference at the Newseum in Washington, DC, in honor of World Press Freedom Day. More than 800 journalists and guests from around the world, including many NED grantees and partners, addressed the Carl at WPFD2011theme, "21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers." more

 

Video from conference panels and speakers, and the presentation of the Guillermo Cano prize to imprisoned Iranian journalist Ahmad Zeidabadi, is now online. NED President Carl Gershman spoke at the opening reception. more

 

A recent Washington Post article by Walter Pincus, "For U.S., managing foreign media is a no-win proposition," featured the CIMA report, Iraq's News Media After Saddammore

Lobsang Sangay
Tibet
Lobsang Sangay, author of a 2003 Journal of Democracy article, was elected the new Tibetan prime minister-in-exile, succeeding the Dalai Lama in much of his political (but not religious) authority. His piece, "Tibet: Exiles' Journey," focused on the democratic phenomenon within the Tibetan diaspora. It is available again online for a limited time. more

CSID Conference on Tunisia & Egypt 
The Center for the Study of Islam and Democracy (CSID), a NED grantee, held its 12th Annual Conference on the theme, "Tunisia's and Egypt's Revolutions and Transitions to Democracy." NED President Carl Gershman spoke. more 

 

World Youth Movement for Democracy
Results of the WYMD essay contest have been announced. Essays by global winners Basem Fathy from Egypt and a participant from Bahrain (name withheld for security) are available online, as are the essays of regional winners. more
