NED Democracy Award to Honor Tunisians and Egyptians
On Wednesday, June 22, 2011, NED will honor all those who have struggled and sacrificed for a democratic future in Tunisia and Egypt with the presentation of its annual Democracy Award.
The Award will be accepted by two individuals who symbolize this ongoing struggle: Zahraa Said from Egypt and Jamel Bettaieb from Tunisia. NED Chairman Richard A. Gephardt will preside at the ceremony, which will take place at a Capitol Hill reception. more |

Peshawar-based Aware Girls uses NED support to provide political advocacy training for young women to prevent 'Talibanization' in rural Pakistan. Founder Gulalai Ismail was recently invited to East London in an effort to prevent radicalization among at-risk youth there. Her work was profiled by the London Guardian. more

Kenya

"Early Lessons from the Middle East"
NED President Carl Gershman joined former President George W. Bush, Bush administration officials, regional analysts and NED grantees at "The Wave of Freedom: Early Lessons from the Middle East," a conference held at the G.W. Sherry Ricchiardi, author of the CIMA report, "Iraq's News Media After Saddam: Liberation, Repression, and Future Prospects," was interviewed on NPR's On the Media on the struggles of Iraqi journalists. more
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Joshua Marks, NED Program Officer for Central Africa, wrote for the Council on Foreign Relations about the need to address potential electoral violence and rebellion in the DRC. more

Florence Ndlovu and Walter Dube of NED grantee the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) were illegally detained after convening a workshop on the effects of torture. more
Angola
Reagan-Fascell Fellow Rafael Marques de Morais wrote "Zero Tolerance Against (Media Investigating) Corruption" for the Angola Notebook of the Global Integrity Report. more

Serbia
Natasa Kandic, founder and director of Serbia's Humanitarian Law Center, spoke about Ratko Mladic's arrest. Kandic, a longtime NED grantee, received NED's Democracy Award (2000) for her documentation of rights violations on all sides of the Balkan conflict. more
