2011 Democracy Award
Tunisian activist Jamel Bettaieb and Zahraa Said, sister of murdered businessman Khaled Said, accepted the 2011 Democracy Awards on behalf of all Tunisians and Egyptians who have struggled for a democratic future. William Burns, U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs, spoke at the ceremony, which was preceded by an experts panel on the continuing struggle for democracy in the Middle East.
Both recipients met with U.S. President Obama in the Oval Office prior to the June 22 ceremony. more |

Penda Mbow, founder of NED grantee Mouvement Citoyen du Senegal, received of the Pope John Paul II Peace Prize from the Vatican for her tireless work promoting inter-religious dialogue. more
Pakistan
Female journalists in Pakistan gathered at a NED-sponsored seminar on "Women journalists towards democracy: challenges and opportunities." The seminar was the culmination a 10-day media training program. more
Russia
NED mourns the passing of Yelena Bonner, the prominent Russian voice for human rights and tireless campaigner along with her late husband Dr. Andrei Sakharov against Soviet totalitarianism. more
Belarus
NED also mourns the passing of former Reagan-Fascell scholar Vitali Silitski after a year-long battle with cancer. Silitski was an analyst, activist and "voice of independent Belarus;" he will be "sorely missed." more
Europe
NED Senior Program Officer for Europe Ivana Howard spoke about human rights in post-conflict societies at the Deutsche Welle Global Media Forum in Bonn, Germany. Her panel focused on past and ongoing peace and state-building missions and sought to shed light on alternative forms of human rights promotion and education. Audio available online. more

On June 2, NED President Carl Gershman participated in a panel celebrating the 60th anniversary of Radio Free Europe's first broadcasts to Czechoslovakia entitled, "No Freedom Without Media Freedom." more
