Voices from Congo Conference Honors Slain NED Grantee Floribert Chebeya
At the recent conference Voices from Congo: The Road Ahead, NED President Carl Gershman presented the Democracy Service Medal to Floribert Chebeya, founder of the Congo-based NED grantee Voice of the Voiceless. His widow, Annie Chebeya, accepted it in his memory. more
The conference opened with a video address from actor Ben Affleck, and featured remarks from Cindy McCain, Gwen Ifill of PBS NewsHour, and U.S. Senator Richard Durbin. The conference also brought a Congolese perspective on the current political and human rights situation facing the country. The event was co-sponsored with NED by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Eastern Congo Initiative. Video is available online. more |

Charles T. Manatt (left), a NED founder, founding chairman of the National Democratic Institute, and early vice-chair of the NED Board, passed away in July. more
John-Dimitry (Dimi) Panitza, a prominent Bulgarian journalist and democracy advocate who founded the Bulgarian School of Politics (a NED grantee), also passed away in July. more
