Annie Chebeya IIVoices from Congo Conference Honors Slain NED Grantee Floribert Chebeya
At the recent conference Voices from Congo: The Road Ahead, NED President Carl Gershman presented the Democracy Service Medal to Floribert Chebeya, founder of the Congo-based NED grantee Voice of the Voiceless. His widow, Annie Chebeya, accepted it in his memory. more

 

The conference opened with a video address from actor Ben Affleck, and featured remarks from Cindy McCain, Gwen Ifill of PBS NewsHour, and U.S. Senator Richard Durbin. The conference also brought a Congolese perspective on the current political and human rights situation facing the country. The event was co-sponsored with NED by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the Eastern Congo Initiative. Video is available online. more

Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)   

CIPE hosted a conference on "Democracy that Delivers for Women." Barbara Haig, NED Deputy to the President for Policy and Strategy, moderated a session on women in democratic reform. Video available online. more

   
Chuck ManattNED Mourns Charles Manatt, Dimi Panitza  

Charles T. Manatt (left), a NED founder, founding chairman of the National Democratic Institute, and early vice-chair of the NED Board, passed away in July. more

  

John-Dimitry (Dimi) Panitza, a prominent Bulgarian journalist and democracy advocate who founded the Bulgarian School of Politics (a NED grantee), also passed away in July. more

Photo Contest  

The World Youth Movement for Democracy (WYMD) announced its First Annual Photography Contest, with the theme, "Youth in Action: A Snapshot of Democracy." Deadline is Nov. 1, 2011. more
