Democracy Spotlight

NED to present its Democracy Award to Burma's Democracy Movement in Capitol Hill Ceremony

Aung San Suu KyiDaw Aung San Suu Kyi will be among those present to pay tribute to five leading activists from Burma who will accept the National Endowment for Democracy's (NED) 2012 Democracy Award honoring the Democracy Movement of Burma.

The activists have endured prison and torture, and in some cases exile, in their efforts to secure freedom and democracy for the people of Burma. The award presentation will take place in the U.S. Capitol on Sept. 20.  more 

 

On Sept. 19, NED is hosting a panel discussion with the recipients of the 1012 Democracy Award entitled, "Advancing Democracy in Burma: New Challenges and Opportunities." more

 

The Oct. issue of the Journal of Democracy will feature a set of essays by Award recipients on the recent political opening in Burma. For a limited time, the Journal is making these essays available to the public free of charge. more

 

The Associated Press covered the decision of 2012 Democracy Award recipient Min Ko Naing to remain in Burma. This is a show of solidarity with more than a dozen other activists who have not been issued their passports. more

Byalyatski BelarusBelarus   

August marked the 1-year anniversary of the arrest of Belarusian democracy activist Ales Byalyatski, head of NED grantee the Viasna Human Rights Center. To mark his continued detention, RFE/RL's Belarus Service is excerpting online a new book on Byalyatski. The introduction was written by NED president Carl Gershman. more

 

 

Iraq

Laith Kubba, NED senior director for Middle East and North Africa, participated in a PBS Newshour discussion on sectarian tensions in Iraq. more 

 

Libya

"Libyan Americans Hold a Vigil," in The American Prospect, features NED partner Aly Abuzakuk, who returned to Libya in 2011 to help rebuild the country's civil society. more 

 

Cuba

"The Sharpening Crisis in Cuba" was the topic of NED president Carl Gershman's talk at the "Pro-Democracy Movements in Totalitarian States" conference on Capitol Hill. more

 

Gershman was also featured, along with NED Board member Francis Fukuyama, in Nueva Politica, a Spanish-language online magazine that features political analysis of the Americas. more

NED grantee East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defender Project (EHAHRDP) is a recipient of the U.S. State Department's Human Rights Defender Award. more 

 

Defending Civil Society

The World Movement for Democracy cohosted, with the Wilson Center and the International Center for Not-for-Profit Law, an event titled, "Understanding and Responding to Attacks on Civil Society: The Roles of Politics and Law." The panel, which included NED president Carl Gershman, examined governmental restrictions on the freedom of peaceful assembly, and what the international community can do in response. more

The Aug. newsletter listed NED Vice President for Research and Studies Marc Plattner as chair of the new MA in Governance, Leadership and Democracy Studies offered by the Universidade Catolica Portuguesa in Lisbon, Portugal. He is actually the chair of the Program's International Advisory Board. more
