Founded in 1995, NED grantee Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) reaches 350,000 women and children annually through its 42 program sites, including four health clinics and 38 education learning centers in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Of the 400 Afghans that AIL employs, over 70% are women. Founder Dr. Sakena Yacoobi was profiled by Forbes magazine. more

Wangari MaathaiKenya   
Wangari Maathai, the first African woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize and founder of past NED grantee Greenbelt Movement, died last month at the age of 71. more

 

Cuba   

Cuban dissidents, including a NED Democracy Award recipient, were brutally assaulted by government security agents during a peaceful protest in Havana. more 

 

Lipset Lecture  

Dr. Abdou Filali-Ansari will speak on "The Arab Revolutions: Democracy and Historical Consciousness" for the Eighth Annual Seymour Martin Lipset Lecture on Democracy in the World.

 

The Lecture will be held October 23, 2011, at the Embassy of Canada. Filali-Ansari is a professor at Aga Khan University's Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisation. more

U.N. General Assembly

NED Vice President David Lowe wrote about the "We Have a Dream" Forum held during the 66th session of the U.N. General Assembly, which featured survivors of torture and former political prisoners. more

 

Liberia, Nigeria

NED grantee Center for Media Studies and Peace-Building and past grantee Media Rights Agenda were honored with the first Pan African Conference on Access to Information Award. more 

 

Côte d'Ivoire 

Côte d'Ivoire's President Ouattara discussed his efforts to rebuild the economy and foster national reconciliation during a Washington briefing cosponsored by NED. more

  

Nepal

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy honored the late Suvash Darnal, a Nepalese democracy activist and NED grantee who was killed in a tragic car accident this summer. more

  

NED held a memorial symposium in Darnal's honor on Sept. 14 entitled, "Securing Dalit Rights and Building Democracy in Nepal." Video is available online. more 

 

China 

NED supported a successful conference in Estonia that brought together over 50 Uyghur women from 10 countries to learn about women's role in promoting human rights and democracy. more

 

Taiwan

"Democracy in East Asia and Taiwan in Global Perspective" was the topic of a major conference cosponsored by NED's International Forum for Democratic Studies. Papers are available online. more

NED and CSIS convened a panel on "Belarus' Political Prospects" in honor of the democracy scholar Vitali Silitsky, who passed away at the age of 38. more
