NED welcomes new cohort of Reagan-Fascell Fellows

NED welcomes its Fall 2012 cohort of Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellows. In residence are leading practitioners, journalists, and scholars from Egypt, Russia, Sri Lanka, the U.S., Yemen, and Zambia. more

Fouzia Saeed: Pioneer for Women's Rights in Pakistan
Dr. Fouzia SaeedNED is also pleased to host visiting fellow Fouzia Saeed, a prominent Pakistani social activist with over 30 years of experience in the field of gender, human rights, and democracy.  Her work to develop a nationwide alliance against sexual harassment, her authorship of anti-harassment legislation, and her success in lobbying for its passage in 2010 gained national recognition.  She currently leads NED grantee Mehergarh, an Islamabad-based human rights and democracy center. On December 5, Saeed spoke about her first-hand experiences as a leading advocate for women's rights at Signs of a Maturing Democracy: Passing Pro-Women Legislation in Pakistan. Liu XiaoboChina    

Two years after being honored in absentia with the Nobel Peace Prize, Chinese democracy advocate and NED grantee Liu Xiaobo (of the Independent Chinese PEN Center) remains in prison, and his wife Liu Xia under de facto house arrest.  On Dec. 12, NED president Carl Gershman testified about the Liu's case before the Congressional-Executive Committee on China. more  

   

Miller Angulo RiveraColombia  

Miller Angulo Rivera, a civil society leader with NED grantee The Association of Displaced Afro-Colombians, was assassinated on Dec. 1 in the city of Tumaco in Nariño, Colombia. more

Cuba
Democracy Digest
reports on the increased government repression of dissidents and civil society in Cuba. more      


Afghanistan

Sakena Yacoobi, founder of NED grantee the Afghan Institute for Learning, was interviewed by NPR's Weekend Edition about her work with women in Afghanistan. more

Bahrain 

The Bahrain Center for Human Rights, a recipient of this year's Democracy Courage Tribute at the World Movement's Assembly in Peru, received the 2012 Baldwin Medal of Liberty from Human Rights First. more

  

Belarus  

NED Senior Director for Europe Rodger Potocki wrote "The Balance Sheet on Belarus" for the Central Europe Digest of the Center for European Policy Analysis. more  

    

Russia   

In November, NED and Freedom House released a statement of international concern to bring attention to the deteriorating situation facing civil society inside Russia. more

  

Remembering Václav Havel   

NED President Carl Gershman spoke at the Czech Embassy on "Havel as a Fighter for Human Rights," to mark the one-year anniversary of Havel's death. more   

    

New Authoritarians      

NED hosted William Dobson, author of The Dictator's Learning Curve: Inside the Global Battle for Democracy, at the panel discussion on, "New Authoritarians and the Challenge to Democracy." Video is available online  more

Christopher Walker, Director of NED's International Forum for Democratic Studies, reviewed Dobson's book in the current issue of the Journal of Democracy. The review is available online free of charge. more

Alfred StepanNinth Annual Lipset Lecture on Democracy in the World

Alfred C. Stepan, the Wallace Sayre Professor of Government at Columbia University, delivered the ninth annual Seymour Martin Lipset Lecture on Democracy in the World at the Embassy of Canada in Washington, DC.

The lecture, entitled "Democratization Theory and the Arab Spring," focused on the theoretical implications of recent upheavals in the Middle East. more
