Queridos amigos:

Es para mí un altísimo honor representar a las Damas de Blanco en esta ceremonia. Nunca he estado más orgullosa ni vibrado con tanto fervor patriótico

Hoy, hace exactamente dos meses que el corazón de Laura Pollán, desbordado de amor por Cuba, dejó de latir, pero su muerte, lejos de dividir a las Damas de Blanco las fortaleció y multiplicó por toda la Isla.

Si me pidieran que definiera su carácter les diría, como el mármol: blanco y duro.

Su esposo y el mío eran colegas de la misma agencia de prensa independiente, pero ni ella ni yo habíamos madurado entonces el enfrentamiento a la dictadura, la primavera negra de Cuba nos hermanó, y afianzó una amistad que se consolidó en la refriega, en los temores a la represalia.

A menudo lloro por Laura, la extraño como amiga y sobre todo por ese decir sincero que a veces sorprendía y a veces irritaba.

En los momentos intensos a los que tuvo que enfrentarse le vi aflorar su dureza de alabastro, su firmeza inclaudicable, y su serenidad y sentido del humor cuando, peligrando cada minuto de su vida, se burlaba de los represores y los hacía quedar en ridículo.

Con su conducción el movimiento de las damas de blanco dejo de ser un grupo de mujeres enviando cartas y haciendo declaraciones públicas, cada una por su lado, para cohesionarse definitivamente en un bloque donde todo se decide por consenso y se respeta la voluntad de cada una.

Las damas de blanco, bajo el liderazgo de Laura, luego de triunfar en su primer empeño: el de ver liberados a todos los prisioneros del Grupo de los 75 y a otros presos políticos y haber alcanzado una visibilidad internacional como ni siquiera sospechábamos en los inicios, cuando éramos un pequeño grupo de mujeres que se estrenaban en la lucha contra el régimen totalitario, se han redefinido como una fuerza defensora de los derechos humanos y la democracia en Cuba.
Los que estamos aquí sabemos de la elevación, dignidad, decoro y altivez de la mujer .No ha habido un solo momento en la historia de la humanidad donde no haya estado presente su valentía, su inteligencia y su perseverancia.
Honrar a Laura es honrar a las Damas de Blanco y honrando a las Damas de Blanco no hacemos otra cosa que rendir tributo a todas las mujeres en el mundo que han enfrentado la injusticia.

Agradecer a ellas sería poco, tenerlas como bastión de inquebrantable confianza en el futuro y la libertad, sería lo justo.
Agradecer a la Fundación Nacional para la Democracia y a todos los presentes por este homenaje a Laura Pollán y prometer en esta tarde solemne no descansar hasta que el sueño de emancipación al cual ella y tantos cubanos consagraron sus vidas, se haga finalmente realidad.

Dear friends,

It is for me a great honor to represent the Ladies in White in this ceremony. I have never been prouder or felt greater passion for my country.

Exactly two months ago today, Laura Pollan’s heart stopped beating, overwhelmed by love for Cuba. Her death did not divide the Ladies in White, but rather strengthened them and multiplied them across the island.

If you asked me to describe her character, I would tell you she was like marble: white and strong.

Her husband and mine were colleagues at the same independence news agency, but at the time she and I had not yet matured. The confrontation against the dictatorship, the Black Spring in Cuba united us, and strengthened our friendship, which was consolidated in the day-to-day battle, in the fear for repressions.

I often cry for Laura. I miss her as a friend, but I also miss her candid talk that often surprised and sometimes annoyed.
When she had to confront the most intense moments, I saw her strength blossom, her unwavering determination, and her serenity and sense of humor, when with her life endangered, she made fun of her repressors and made them look ridiculous.

Under her leadership, the movement of the Ladies in White stopped being a group of women sending letters and making public statements each on their own accord, and became a cohesive bloc where everything is decided by consensus and the will of everyone is respected.

The Ladies in White, under Laura’s leadership, succeeded in its first aim: to see the prisoners of the Group of the 75 and other political prisoners free. It also reached a level of international visibility that we would have never suspected when we were a small group of women that was just beginning its fight against a totalitarian regime. The Ladies in White have been redefined as a force in defense of human rights and democracy in Cuba.

Those who are here today know of the dignity, decorum and poise of women. There has never been a moment in the history of humanity when a woman’s courage, intelligence and perseverance have not been present.

To honor Laura is to honor the Ladies in White, and by honoring the Ladies in White we give tribute to all the women around the world who have faced injustice.

It would not be enough to thank them. It would instead be fairer to recognize them as a bastion of support for our unbreakable faith in the future and in freedom.

I would like to thank the National Endowment for Democracy and all of you here today for this tribute to Laura Pollan. I promise you I will not rest until the dream for freedom that she and many other Cubans dedicated their lives to is finally realized.
