New Books Highlight Questions of Identity

NED partners authored books on Turkey and Azerbaijan this fall examining questions of identity in the region. The Identity Dilemmas of the Turkic States in the 21st Century (CNIS, 2011), by Dr. Leila Alieva of NED grantee Center for National and International Studies (CNIS), looks at regional relationships and the legacy of the Cold War. A NED-sponsored panel held by CNIS explored these themes as part of its “People's Republic of Azerbaijan - 93” project; a video summary is available online.

The other book is Islam and Religious Freedom in Independent Azerbaijan, 1997-2011, edited by Hikmet Hadjy-Zadeh, founder of NED grantee the Center for Political and Economic Research (or FAR Center), which conducts seminars on democracy theory, human rights, and political involvement for students in Azerbaijan. Hadjy-Zadeh’s book focuses on the compatibility of modern Muslim practice and the secular democratic state. He is currently a Reagan-Fascell Democracy Scholar at NED. The book was published by Lambert Academic Press and is available online
