Repeated Attacks Make Adjumani Refugee Camp Insecure
A report delivered by Mr. Wani James says that on 3rd July 1998 two unidentified gunmen attacked the girls hostel of Alere Self Help Secondary School in Adjumani in the night. The gunmen are said to have gone to the door of the dormitory and ordered the Head girl to come out. When the watchman who was on duty heard the commotion and flashed a torch at the door the attackers started firing bullets into the air. This scared the girls and they ran out of the dormitory in disarray. A few of them were rounded up by the attackers but were later rescued when other students got the courage to follow up the attackers who panicked and fled. One student, Fatima Yellow, a 19 year old girl in form four was raped. During the scampering many students sustained injuries and many are still scared and depressed since there are no guarantees that there will not be another attack. The Headmaster of the school, Rev. Father Robert Aliunzi has appealed to the entire community to devise ways of ensuring that the Hostel is given adequate protection. In another incident on 3rd May 1998 a gunman went to Umia Refugee Settlement camp in Adjumani and shot at a woman (names withheld) who was brewing alcohol. After the incident he ran in the direction of Agojo and Alere refugee camps. When an alarm was made to alert the people of his presence he shot bullets into the air to scare them as he escaped. A week later after the above incident three gunmen attacked the Robidire Catholic Chapel at around 11.00 pm when the Fathers and Sisters were for supper. One Father Jacob who was on a visit to the chapel was shot in the hand. A witness said the rebels ordered the Sisters and Fathers to give them money. They had to surrender all the money they had and much of this money had been earmarked for the rehabilitation of the chapel, the dispensaries and the schools to serve the refugees. One of the Sisters was abducted and taken by the attackers. By the time the camp chairman of Robidire, Mr. Anthony Duku mobilized the refugees to rescue the Sister they found when she had been raped and later tortured. Following this incident, the Chapel which was meant for the service of refugees has now been transferred to Adjumani town, 10 km away from the refugee camp. Every day the situation is growing worse. Incidences of looting, killings and rape, among others, keep escalating. Unidentified gunmen seem to have targeted mainly the refugee population and until some more stringent security arrangements are made the refugees are bound to remain soft spots for wrong intentioned people to attack. As the rebels attack homes, shops and dispensaries, massive human rights abuses are inflicted. |
