For two days, 25th- 26th September 1998, the Sudan, Human Rights Association [SHRA] conducted a training seminar for opinion leaders in refugee camps in Uganda and the war torn areas of Sudan.

The training seminar was held at the Cardinal Nsubuga Leadership Training Centre, Kampala bringing together ten participants.

The participants were representatives from the camps of Adjumani, Achol-Pii, Kiryandongo, Kyangwali, Rhino and Imvepi. It was also attended by two elders; one from the Sudanese community in Kampala and another from the war torn area of Sudan.

The participants were sensitized on concepts of human rights in general, the rights of refugees, and on the monitoring, documentation and reporting of human rights violations. The seminar also imparted skills in conflict resolution to enable them to solve local disputes in their constituents. At the opening ceremony the Acting Secretary General, SHRA, Mr. Mohamed Abderhaman Salih re-affirmed the commitment of SHRA to promoting the rights of Sudanese refugees in Uganda, Kenya and Congo.

The chief guest at the closing, Mr. Patrice Vahard, Executive Director, Amnesty International Regional Office, Kampala, commended the work of SHRA. He reiterated that the issue of refugees is a question of humanity and called for the need for people to understand that refugees are entitled to full rights like all other human beings.
