Sudan Monitor

A Quarterly Newsletter of the
Sudan Human Rights Association (SHRA)

EDITORIAL

This issue of The Sudan Monitor covers the period, October to December, 1999. During this period SHRA conducted an assessment field tour to refugee camps in the Democratic Republic of Congo, it issued a press release on the plight of refugees in the D.R.Congo; and compiled and disseminated a report of the field tour.

Like the previous issues The Sudan Monitor will continue to be a prime medium for information dissemination on the plight of refugees and the internally displaced in war affected parts of Sudan to the stake holders and those actively involved in human rights work.

The civil strive in the seventeen-year war continues to unleash grave violations of human rights perpetrated by the warring parties involved in the conflict. Attacks on civilians are frequent and the transport and communication infrastructure has been disrupted.

As we enter the third millennium, there is the need to understand that the primary victims of the civil war are the civilian population. The call is therefore to the international community, and all relevant local actors to work towards peace and bring sanity to situation of the suffering masses.
