$410,000 To assist trade unions and NGOs in Thailand and Guatemala in the development of a worker rights report on the status of respect for core labor standards. The report will provide knowledge of mechanisms that will help to increase respect for workers rights and assist in the establishment of a workers rights monitoring network to improve advocacy efforts. American Center for International Labor Solidarity $263,829 To continue to strengthen trade unions representing textile and apparel workers and other civil society organizations concerned with the impact of the phase-out of the Multi-Fiber Agreement. Through research on industry sourcing patterns and corporate social responsibility policies of apparel industry firms, and through sharing their experiences with national and international allies, unions and civil society organizations will strengthen their capacity to understand industry trends and to influence business and government behavior through dialogue. Center for International Private Enterprise $223,177 To maintain the Forum for Economic Freedom for the purpose of showcasing the democratic and market-reform efforts of regional and multiregional programs. The Forum provides economic reform articles and association management advice, as well as vast networking opportunities in nearly a dozen languages. Center for International Private Enterprise $179,745 To build a knowledge-management system that captures CIPE's lessons learned for systematic application to future programming. The system will allow CIPE to build a project assessment tool that will help in generating case studies based on past programs and record the experiences of foreign offices. Ultimately, these efforts will increase the quality and likelihood of success of similar projects undertaken in the future. Center for International Private Enterprise $82,748 To develop private sector tools to combat corruption. CIPE will continue to work with Transparency International to increase the outreach and effectiveness of the Business Principles for Countering Bribery, which provide companies with a framework for improving internal practices and procedures. Global Youth Action Network $12,125* To establish the secretariat for the World Youth Movement for Democracy. The Brazil regional office of the Global Youth Action Network will serve as the secretariat to develop the Youth Movement's governing body, build a framework for activities, organize campaigns to link youth democracy activists, and build a strong global movement of young people to uphold democratic values. Institute of Social Sciences $12,125* To establish the Global Network on Local Governance's secretariat to be located at the India-based Institute of Social Sciences. The Secretariat will develop a website, maintain an online discussion list, publish an information newsletter, monitor significant developments with regard to local government, and organize a workshop in New Delhi to officially launch the Network and to set the agenda for the World Movement's Fourth Assembly. International Republican Institute $750,000 To support the creation of a Women's Democracy Network. The network will focus on supporting women to take part in the democratic development of their countries, especially in the Middle East and will establish a mentoring program that will match aspiring women leaders with accomplished women leaders from around the world for direct support, training, and experience-sharing. A series of events will bring together groups of mentors and their protégés for an opening conference, several regional workshops, and follow-up sessions. In between sessions, IRI will provide a clearinghouse for communication and training using technologies such as the creation of a website and video conferencing. Internews Network USA $100,000 To organize, support, and strengthen media development organizations by organizing a conference that will develop a network to conduct a series of follow-up activities. The conference in Jordan will bring together representatives from media support NGOs, independent journalists, broadcasters and media activists. Themes for the conference include best practices promotion and the creation of standards, donor-implementer communication, and advocacy. Kenyan Human Rights Commission $38,000* To secure democratic gains in Africa by organizing a meeting in Lagos, Nigeria, that will bring together civil society representatives and practitioners from nearly 20 African countries to formulate innovative ways to promote democracy for greater justice, social and political stability, and sustainable economic growth. The Kenyan Human Rights Commission serves as the secretariat for the World Movement for Democracy-affiliated African Democracy Forum, an African regional network of over 250 democracy activists. The meeting will serve as an Africa regional preparatory meeting for the World Movement for Democracy's Fourth Assembly in Turkey in April 2006. Kenyan Human Rights Commission $25,000* To promote better understanding of the connection between peace building and democracy, and to empower young East African activists who work in environments of conflict with democratic leadership skills. Under auspices of the African Democracy Forum and the World Movement for Democracy, the Kenyan Human Rights Commission will organize a training program for young activists from several East African countries on the causes of conflict, and how human rights, rule of law and civic education work can contribute to conflict resolution. Kenyan Human Rights Commission $2,800* To provide a better understanding of the connection between peace-building and democracy, and to empower young East African activists who work in environments of conflict with democratic leadership skills. Supplemental funds will support the implementation of recommended activities in several East African countries, including Kenya, Somaliland, Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda, that emerged from the discussions at the December Nairobi training program for young democracy activists that was supported by NED. Leadership Council for Human Rights $451,560 To increase the capacity of human rights groups working on religious, ethnic, and gender discrimination. Activities will include linking human rights groups that work with persecuted communities in Iraq, Egypt, Vietnam, and Afghanistan, conducting trainings, and organizing visitor programs for human rights activists in Washington, D.C. or other major cities. Lower East Side Tenement Museum $83,674 To help build the capacity of historic sites in Africa, Asia, South America and Russia to address common challenges to their democracies. Activities will include the launch of Regional Networks of Sites of Conscience, creation of a "Dialogue for Democracy Program," and production of tool kits for civic engagement programs. National Democratic Institute for International Affairs $40,615 To further refine its approach to public opinion research, NDI will conduct an evaluation of its NED-funded research projects. The findings will address how research has been used in developmental settings in the past and how it can be used more strategically in the future. National Democratic Institute for International Affairs $69,547 To support the development of democratic parties around the world by strengthening the NDI-Party International Partnership. A working group will be established to draft norms for democratic political parties, monitor the working conditions of democratic political leaders in closed and authoritarian societies, and identify a country in Central or West Africa where partners could work to support democratic political parties. National Democratic Institute for International Affairs $599,705 To continue to strengthen women's leadership capacity in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The program includes leadership training programs for women and girls in Muslim-majority countries, development of culture specific learning materials, the publication of NGO capacity-building curricula, as well as the testing and adaptation of a multimedia leadership curriculum in different languages. National Democratic Institute for International Affairs $12,125 To continue to strengthen the role of women as potential leaders in order to further consolidate democracy in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East.
