To train and mobilize young African activists to defend human rights and to strengthen collaboration between human rights networks across West and Central Africa. Agir Ensemble will convene a three-day inter-African meeting in Dakar, Senegal for young human rights activists. Following the meeting, Agir Ensemble will award subgrants for human rights projects in Burundi, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, and Republic of Congo.

To strengthen the capacity of oil sector trade unions in Angola and Nigeria. ACILS will train in effective advocacy techniques and develop strategies to increase union presence in employers and government discussions on issues of transparency and accountability. The program will target elected leaders and researchers of oil sector trade unions in order to gather and analyze data relevant to their advocacy.

Center for International Private Enterprise

To promote networking and dialogue on corporate governance issues within civil society. Together with the World Bank Global Forum, CIPE will organize a conference which will aim to create and support African solutions to corporate governance challenges. Topics will include state-owned enterprises, cooperatives, and the role of investors. The 120 participants will develop recommendations and findings that will feed into national initiatives on corporate governance in the NEPAD process.

Freedom House

To develop and promote the creation of an Africa Institute for Democracy and Rule of Law. Funding will support staff, travel, and activities for an initial six-month planning and development stage to create the Institute. Freedom House will convene representatives of key institutions already involved in such work, and other interested parties, at a regional planning conference to be held in Africa.

Kabissa

To support the Africa Democracy Forum's (ADF) networking and advocacy through the development of a website. Drawn from management committee priorities, Kabissa will create a website with a member profile database, translation and newsletter-creation tools, and online discussion features. Kabissa will travel to the next ADF meeting to launch the website as well as lead a training workshop on both the website and general Internet skills.

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs

To strengthen the capacity of legislators by enhancing parliamentary outreach on HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, and care in Mozambique, Nambia, and Zambia. NDI will train legislators in parliamentary outreach strategies to increase government involvement and decrease stigma and misinformation. With the Southern African Development Community Parliamentary Forum, NDI will compile a report of lessons learned and suggested recommendations.

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs

To identify and raise awareness of effective policies, strategies, structures and techniques to oversee revenues from extractive industries and to assist reformers in selected countries to increase democratic oversight. NDI will access mechanisms to promote transparency and identify obstacles that impede transparency. NDI will disseminate the findings and include model laws, policies and pilot projects in its report.

To highlight the efforts of former African Heads of State and encourage their constructive engagement in democratization efforts. Building on momentum from the inaugural African Statesmen Initiative symposium, NDI will facilitate a review session for five former African presidents to discuss the symposium's outcomes and possible next steps. The former statesmen also will participate in the Congressional Black Caucus' Foreign Affairs Brain Trust on Africa's leadership and democratization.

Reporters Sans Frontières (Reporters Without Borders) (RSF)

To strengthen free press and decrease press abuse in Eritrea, Zimbabwe, Somalia, and Côte d'Ivoire. RSF will assist jailed or threatened journalists with legal and medical aid as well as material support, and will conduct training workshops on investigating press abuses and managing crisis situations. RSF will also write country reports to analyze press freedom, increase awareness of endangered journalists, and make recommendations to the authorities.
