Center for Human Rights, Democracy and Development (CHDD)

To increase youth participation in the democratic process. CHDD will organize a five-day regional workshop on leadership and conflict resolution skills for 60 participants, targeting civic and religious leaders, local councilors, and teachers. Facilitators will include members of the parliament and civil society leaders, who will discuss democracy and human rights and train in facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution skills.
East Africa Human Rights Defenders Network
$42,000*
To strengthen the work of human rights activists in East Africa by enhancing their effectiveness in defending human rights and reducing their vulnerability to the risk of persecution. The Centre will open a regional coordination office in Kampala, Uganda and conduct one workshop for Ugandan human rights activists. Future activities will include training, capacity building and emergency support for human rights activists.
International Republican Institute
$300,000
To support the professional development of political parties in order to compete in a multiparty political system. IRI will support five strategic party retreats, one for each of the major Ugandan parties. Each party will develop strategies and implementation plans to extend their program into new areas. Retreats will empower grassroots party workers to deliver their party's mission to constituency members and hold party leaders accountable.
Lwo Development Incorporated (LDI)
$47,042*
To strengthen peace-building and psychosocial support among Acholi communities and traditional leaders in northern Uganda. LDI will reintegrate child soldiers into their communities using culturally appropriate conflict resolution mechanisms. LDI will also produce radio programs on peace and human rights and conduct peace meetings to train traditional chiefs in peace building methodology.
Sudan Human Rights Association (SHRA)
$52,090*
To raise awareness of the plight of refugees in Sudan, Uganda, DRC, and Kenya and to educate refugees on their human rights. SHRA will monitor and document refugee situations while also providing refugees tools to help them recognize and protect their rights. SHRA will create a website, produce a quarterly magazine, and write an annual country report.
