To promote advances in freedom of association, collective bargaining, and advocacy for telecommunications workers. ACILS, in conjunction with local trade union partners, Union Network International and the Communications Workers of America, will develop a multi-faceted curriculum for activities, which will be geared toward strengthening the ability of labor to interact in a professional and proactive manner internally as well as with governments and employers.
Freedom House
$300,000
To establish an African Institute for Democracy and Rule of Law. Freedom House will convene a second and final regional planning meeting in Africa to generate concrete concepts defining the structure and content of the Institute, develop a draft curriculum for the Institute, and hold a pilot training program for ten next generation leaders from all over sub-Sahara Africa.
Reporters Sans Frontieres (Reporters Without Borders) (RSF)

To strengthen correspondent networks in Africa. RSF will send missions to Somalia, Mauritania, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Cote d'Ivoire, and Gambia to provide training on how to conduct an investigation into press abuses and how to manage crisis situations such as civil war. The missions will analyze the cases of imprisoned journalists and assess freedom of the press. RSF will also provide direct support and legal aid to persecuted journalists.
