To promote respect for land rights and reinforce local capacity to resolve conflicts in western Côte d'Ivoire. CUA will hold training-of-trainers workshops on land rights, specific legal codes, nationality issues, human rights, and conflict resolution techniques for participants who will then be deployed into local communities to disseminate the teaching. Initial training will be led by lawyers, human rights experts, and a specialist from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Ligue Ivoirien des Droits de l'Homme (Ivorian League for Human Rights) (LIDHO)

To promote nonviolent civic participation, tolerance, and democracy among young people in Cote d'Ivoire. LIDHO will organize a three-day seminar, eight civic education workshops, and nine public conferences for university students, professors, and staff to focus on nonviolence and peace building. Participants will create a university observatory body to serve as a forum for dialogue, tracking instances of abuse and coordinating collaboration between universities.
Mouvement Ivoirien des Droits Humains (Ivorian Movement for Human Rights) (MIDH)

To strengthen the capacity of MIDH to provide aid to torture victims and to report on human rights abuses in Cote d'Ivoire. MIDH will contract lawyers to provide pro bono legal aid and doctors to provide medical and psychological assistance to victims of torture and other human rights abuses. MIDH will also continue investigating and reporting on cases of human rights abuse.
National Democratic Institute for International Affairs

To enhance the capacity of political parties and civil society organizations to monitor the electoral process and prepare the populace for Cote d'Ivoire's 2006 elections. Activities will include training and technical assistance to political parties and election monitors, leadership consultations and roundtable discussions, development guides for party poll watchers and registration observers, workshops for poll watchers and election observers, and assistance to local voter education providers.
ONG Femme Active de Côte d'Ivoire (NGO Active Woman of Cote d'Ivoire) (OFACI)
$27,500
To develop local conflict prevention and resolution capacities in western Cote d'Ivoire. OFACI will establish Peace Centers in two rural areas to train community members on conflict mediation strategies and to document human rights abuses. OFACI will use the Peace Centers as venues for numerous workshops geared toward training women and young people in human rights, civic responsibility, and democratic principles.
