Association de Femmes Chefs de Famille (AFCF)

To strengthen women's participation in Mauritania's democratic transition, and to improve community oversight of elected officials. AFCF will lead a program of civic education and training for women political candidates, community leaders, and political party representatives in southern Mauritania. Additionally, AFCF will launch an advocacy campaign in favor of proposed legislation mandating a 20 percent quota for female candidates, and will lead a post-election campaign for transparency and accountability in government.

To enhance Mauritanian political actors' understanding of the electoral processes that support democratic transition. NDI will organize a study mission for Mauritanian officials to recently-transitioned neighbouring countries and will bring electoral experts to Mauritania through a series of roundtables. NDI will also produce civic education materials in French and Arabic.

To increase the capacity of Mauritanian political parties to influence transition planning and enhance women's involvement in the political process. NDI will open an office in Nouakchott, where an expatriate political party expert and other staff members will provide consulting services, host roundtables and forums, and serve as a resource to local parties and coalitions.

To build on NDI's current project of capacity building for political parties and enhancing women's political involvement in preparation for upcoming elections. NDI will continue to maintain a resource center for political parties, while also holding periodic trainings for potential political candidates. Additionally, NDI will provide technical assistance to parties, broker dialogue on key issues, and facilitate coalition building. NDI will continue to place a strong emphasis on the participation of women in the elections, addressing the issue of quotas and women's networks.
