The Solidarity Center will partner with the East African Journalists’ Association to foster greater regional collaboration among its national members to counter threats to freedom of expression and freedom of association. Additional training will be provided to address gender discrimination and the safety of journalists in conflict zones. Program activities will include participants from Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Somalia, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda.

East & Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network (EHAHRDN)

To strengthen regional solidarity among human rights organizations and activists. EHAHRDN will expand its regional network of human rights defenders to include Rwanda and Burundi as member countries and will convene a sub-regional consultation meeting in Kampala, Uganda. EHAHRDN will also provide emergency support to a group of 24 Somali journalists fleeing persecution in Mogadishu.

To protect and build the capacity of human rights defenders in East Africa. EHAHRDN will continue to strengthen human rights defenders’ ability to protect themselves, coordinate campaigns, and lobby for wider recognition and bundling expertise as a network. EHAHRDN will also serve as the secretariat for the Johannesburg+10 All Africa Human Rights Defenders Conference.
