To improve informal sector policy and ensure that grassroots entrepreneurs have access to full democratic participation. CIPE will continue support to Kenya Gatsby Trust and work to give informal entrepreneurs a voice in the policymaking process.
Citizens against Violence (CAVi)
$49,769
To encourage militia leaders in Nairobi’s slums to reduce recruitment and operations and to promote peaceful dialogue between landlords and tenants. CAVi will hold meetings with two main rival militia groups and then bring participants from both sides together to discuss grievances and the possibilities for the peaceful resolution of hostilities. CAVi will train youth leaders from Nairobi’s slums on democracy, good governance, and conflict management.
International Republican Institute (IRI)
$600,000
To strengthen the role of parliamentary caucuses in advancing their parties’ legislative agendas in parliament. IRI will work with political party caucuses to develop cohesive legislative agendas, reflective of the political parties’ legislative goals. IRI will also work with women and Muslim MPs, as well as the Kenya Young Parliamentarians’ Association, to help women, Muslim, and young MPs develop legislation that addresses issues important to their respective constituencies and build the capacity of these groups in serving as legislators.
National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI)
$265,000
To strengthen Kenya’s leading political parties’ abilities to assess their internal strengths and weaknesses and create improved management structures that enable them to better communicate and cooperate with their respective coalitions and the national Grand Coalition government. NDI will facilitate roundtable discussions with parties and provide technical assistance to allow them to explore their strengths and weaknesses in the post-election, power-sharing environment; create assessment reports and actionable strategic plans; and begin to implement these strategic plans.
Peace Tree Network (PTN)
$28,360
To promote justice and peace through dialogue and support the emergence of a nonviolent youth movement that embraces responsible citizenry, human rights and democratic governance. PTN will undertake two workshops and five bridge-building and reconciliation meetings that focus on the role that land and violence plays in local tensions between communities and the government, and how they can move from dialogue to reconciliation and sustainable coexistence.
