Ethiopia

Alliance for Peace and Democracy (APED)

To reduce ethnic-based conflict among neighboring groups and promote conflict management, good governance, human rights and civic engagement. APED will hold two, three-day trainings for a total of 60 high school students and three, five-day training-of-trainer workshops for 30 participants. APED will develop and distribute Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials on democracy, human rights, gender and peace education that are easily understood and culturally sensitive.

Bright Africa Youth Association (BAYA)

To promote a strong bond between youth in different regions, enhance their leadership skills and create strong youth-led institutions BAYA will continue to operate its youth information centers in Mekele and Adigrat and add a site in Axum. The centers are a hub for girls and youth clubs in the region. BAYA will also conduct a national youth roundtable and build the capacity of 150 high-school parliamentarians.

Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)

To raise public awareness of economic policy and foster dialogue between the business community and policymakers. CIPE will support the Mekelle Chamber to broadcast a weekly radio program featuring business news and policy information in Ethiopia’s Tigray region, where access to information is limited. The program will complement local business and civil society advocacy efforts towards policy reform.

Ethiopian Bar Association (EBA)

To enhance the Ethiopian public’s knowledge about its laws and rights. EBA will run a newspaper column, produce one brochure on procedures for criminal and civil litigation and another on due process, and conduct two workshops on international legal instruments, civil and political rights, and the Ethiopian Constitution. EBA will work with law students to deliver trainings to civil society and traditional leaders and research information about current legal and civic education initiatives in Ethiopia.

Ketar Development Association (KDA)

To enhance the ability of community members to build and implement a vision for the community and establish 10 business associations. KDA will conduct three five-day workshops that help local entrepreneurs shift their paradigm from traditional economic activities and establish business associations based on their different trades. KDA will also train local officials in planning techniques and challenge them to insert structure, vision and motivation in their work for the community.

Research Center for Civic and Human Rights Education (RCCHE)

To enhance prospects for community environmental action in the Gelan industrial area. RCCHE will hold three trainings for 120 stakeholders from civil society, industry, government and the community to explore solutions to environmental issues and develop strategies that are owned and enacted locally. Workshops will focus on technical issues, networking, organizing, and harnessing indigenous knowledge. RCCHE will establish plant nursery stations to aid in the environmental protection initiatives.
