Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)

To strengthen policy advocacy at the regional level to improve the business climate and strengthen peace-building. This program will assist regional private sector groups in Kenya to identify key advocacy issues, develop regional business agendas, form broad-based private sector and civil society coalitions, and engage public officials in policy dialogue to promote peace and reconstruction.

Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)

To strengthen the voice of stakeholders in the design and oversight of policies affecting the micro and small enterprises sector. CIPE will support the Kenya Gatsby Trust to mobilize informal sector entrepreneurs to advocate for policy reforms and play a watchdog role over policy implementation. The program will engage key public and private sector stakeholders in dialogue and institutionalize grassroots participation in Kenya’s policymaking process.

Centre for Economic and Libertarian Affairs (CELA)

To strengthen citizen participation in decision-making on devolved funds and promote a culture of service delivery by local councils. CELA will conduct 17 one-day workshops for 50 participants, and produce a monthly newsletter, Citizen Voice, with information on projects derived from devolved funds. CELA will also present six radio shows that disseminate information on citizen participation.

Citizens Against Violence Organization (CAVI)

To speed recovery from post-election violence, forestall future violence, and organize communities. CAVI will work in six slums near Nairobi to establish monthly forums that discuss government services for residents and ways to reduce the prevalence of political support based on ethnicity. CAVI will create quarterly meetings between estate representatives, policymakers and other stakeholders, publish a quarterly community newsletter, and organize a youth football tournament.

International Republican Institute (IRI)
$400,000
To increase the level of citizen participation in decision-making processes at the local level. The IRI will provide Kenyan local public officials with skills that will facilitate governance policies that take into account communities’ most pressing needs. IRI will strengthen the ability of citizens to serve as effective advocates for their communities and hold government to higher standards of transparency and accountability.

The African Center for Open Governance (AfriCOG)

To enhance the ability of MOPA to support actions that confront ethnicity and ethnic based politics. AfriCOG will guide MOPA as it mobilizes citizens through forums, workshops, and non-violent action to demand accountable government. Trainings will take place at Camp MOPA and AfriCOG will inform member organizations of MOPA’s activities and act as an exchange point for information and recommendations.

Nairobi Disabled Empowerment Programme (NADEP)

To empower disabled persons with human rights information and advocacy skills to improve their lives through better service delivery from the government. NADEP will conduct human rights workshops, outreach forums, sensitization and advocacy meetings, a stakeholder workshop, community leaders’ forums, a government leaders workshop, local authority and city council forums, six months of peer education on human rights, and an advocacy workshop.

Youth Alive! Kenya

To harness the social capital of young people to demand accountability in the delivery of public services and the management of public resources, and mobilize broad-based action by stakeholders to facilitate the enactment of the Kenya National Youth Policy. Youth Alive! Kenya will conduct two workshops and a survey, attend parliamentary sessions and council meetings, prepare two policy briefs, participate in ministerial roundtables, and conduct advocacy visits to parliamentarians.
