To build the capacity of trade unions in Lesotho, Swaziland, and Mozambique. This will support the democracy-building process in each location, and strengthen the organizing and collective bargaining programming within each union partner to promote freedom of association. The Solidarity Center will utilize a combination of workshops, workplace visits and other activities to assist its partners in capacity-building and the development of sustainable joint programming in support of democratic reform.

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI)

To conduct workshops to assist women in Lesotho and Zambia to develop the skills necessary to participate more effectively in politics in leadership roles. Participants will identify a relevant recommendation on increasing women’s representation and push for its implementation within their respective parties with assistance from NDI. Women will be encouraged to maintain contact through the use of an internet discussion circle.

To strengthen the capacity of legislators to address HIV/AIDS. NDI will support Mozambican legislators to disseminate recently drafted anti-discrimination legislation, conduct constituency outreach to sensitize citizens on its content and ensure the law is properly implemented. In Lesotho, NDI will support the Social Cluster Portfolio Committee to refine its HIV/AIDS workplan and improve its constituency outreach. NDI will develop a toolkit to guide SADC parliamentarians on passing legislation on HIV/AIDS.

To strengthen the organizational structure and strategic approach of the Southern African Development Community-Election Support Network as an election monitoring and advocacy network and to enhance the capacities of member organizations to conduct advanced, systematic election monitoring and advocacy. The Institute will provide SADC-ESN assistance in strategic planning and skills building and facilitate internal communications through traditional and new technologies.
