To empower citizens in northern Sudan with the knowledge and capacity to participate in the upcoming national elections. KACE will conduct workshops, post election debates, public talks and musical performances.

Babiker Badri Scientific Association for Women Studies (BBSAWS)

To promote women’s political participation in the upcoming national elections in Sudan and strengthen the capacity of Sudanese women running for political office. The BBSAWS will conduct 10 one-day seminars on gender advocacy and three five-day training workshops in Khartoum, Kassala and Southern Kordofan states for members of various political parties, youth, women’s groups and media professionals. BBSAWS will produce simple educational materials for women in rural areas.

Badya Centre for Integrated Development Services

To empower citizens of the Nuba Mountains with the knowledge and tools to mitigate electoral violence, and raise awareness about democracy, human rights, and peace. The Badya Centre will conduct six workshops on strategies for managing conflict, and organize three seminars for prisoners on civic and political rights. The Centre will continue its Theater for Democracy and Peace tournament.

Centre for Documentation and Advocacy (CDA)

To promote freedom of information and good governance in Southern Sudan through independent media. CDA will continue to publish its monthly magazine, the South Sudan Post. The Post contains editorials, feature articles, transcripts of important speeches, reproductions of significant political documents, and reader comments.

Civil Society Consortium for the Elections

To strengthen the coordination of civil society organizations working towards a fair and free election in Sudan and advance voter participation in the upcoming national elections. The consortium will organize two symposiums on the election law, and the functions and mandate of the National Electoral Commission (NEC). The consortium will produce and disseminate a quarterly newsletter that will discuss events, initiatives being undertaken by members, and the latest news on the electoral process.

Cush Community Relief International (CCRI)

To enhance the role of youth in the democratization process within the Jonglei State of Sudan. Cush Community Relief International will conduct human rights and civic education training for youth, and will develop a group of election observers to promote voter participation and monitor the upcoming elections. CCRI will hold five state-level training workshops for youth from various civil organizations, the University of Juba and the government. CCRI will produce and publish a youth-friendly quarterly newsletter.

Friends of Africa International (FAI)

To strengthen and promote peaceful electoral participation in Sudan. FAI will train and mobilize civil society groups, political party and electoral officials at the local and regional levels on electoral transparency and conflict management. FAI will produce 1000 copies of a handbook on early conflict management for participants and election monitors.

Grand Africa Media Service Company (GAMSCO)

To increase the media coverage in all ten states in southern Sudan. GAMSCO will appoint reporters in each of the ten states of the south, and hire two coordinators, one in Juba and one in Khartoum, to administer the project. Currently GAMSCO has an office in Khartoum which publishes the English daily newspaper, the Khartoum Monitor, and the Arabic daily newspaper, Al-Muragib.

Institute for the Development of Civil Society (IDCS), Sharg El Neil College

To promote active and effective political participation in Khartoum State. The IDCS will convene six public lectures targeting voters in the seven localities of Khartoum State. The primary focus of this voter education campaign is to target eligible voters from diverse backgrounds who live on the outskirts of Khartoum. The Institute will commission musicians, poets and song writers to arrange and compose electoral messages to further educate young voters.

Justice Africa (JA)

To promote a culture of open dialogue and debate in Sudan and strengthen civil society’s capacity to play a role in supporting democratic processes, JA will provide a forum for all recognized political parties to present and discuss their platforms to Sudan’s diverse and growing electorate. JA will conduct two televised presidential debates in Juba and Khartoum and set up a debate committee that will consist of members from local civil society organizations and JA staff.

Kuli Baila Organization

To raise the awareness and build the capacity of various Arab and African ethnic groups in Darfur to resolve conflict and understand their basic rights. The Kuli Baila Organization will train 90 African and Arab community chiefs and other leaders in Darfur on basic concepts of human rights, conflict resolution, peace building and women’s empowerment. The participants will share what they have learned with their home communities and IDP settlements.

Kwoto Cultural Center

To promote human rights, democracy, peace and reconciliation among youth and displaced communities in Sudan. Kwoto will promote dialogue and reconciliation between different ethnic communities in Sudan. A dance and drama troupe will travel the country to perform shows for displaced communities in and around Khartoum, organize a lecture series on democracy, media and elections. Kwoto will also organize a three-day workshop at the Regency Hotel on transitional justice and invite experts from South Africa to facilitate the workshop.

Multi Media Training Center (MMTC)

To build the capacity of local journalists in southern Sudan. The Multi Media Training Center will conduct four training sessions in basic journalism. All four courses will discuss the role of media in conflict resolution, mitigation, and prevention. Trainers will also provide lessons in how to write news, editorials and feature stories, while MMTC staff will discuss theories of the press, ethics, public relations and press freedom.

Mundri Relief and Development Association (MRDA)

To raise awareness about the upcoming elections in southern Sudan, strengthen politicians’ commitment to community development and increase the free flow of public information. MRDA will train voter educators who will provide monthly community-level training sessions to six sub-counties in Western Equatoria state, draft a memorandum of understanding between the community and political candidates, and produce a monthly newsletter focusing on the development initiatives being undertaken at the community level by the state and civil society.

Mutawinat Benevolent Company

To enhance access to the legal system for disadvantaged women and juveniles in Sudan and promote women’s political participation in Sudan’s national elections. Mutawinat will provide direct legal assistance to disadvantaged women and children in Sudan by taking on 400 new cases. Mutawinat will conduct a training-of-trainers workshop for 20 participants on election observation, electoral education sessions for prisoners and marginalized communities, and continue to operate an onsite clinic at the women’s prison in Omdurman.

National Center for Peace and Development (NCPD)

To promote electoral participation, peace, transparency, democracy, rule of law and human rights in Sudan. The NCPD will train at least 1600 potential voters, election observers, political and traditional leaders, trade unionists, journalists, gender activists and marginalized citizens.

Nile Institute for Strategic Policy and Development (NISPDS)

To build the capacity of Southern Sudanese policy makers to undertake strategic policy planning and development in their respective regions. The NISPDS will educate Southern Sudanese policy makers at both the state and county level on how to adequately plan, prioritize and deliver basic services. NISPDS will promote peace and reconciliation by addressing conflict centered on customary land tenure practices among southern Sudanese communities.

Peace Bridge Association

To promote awareness and participation in Sudan’s upcoming national elections among youth at the university level in Khartoum, Gezira, and Northern Kordofan. The Peace Bridge Association will conduct eight voter education workshops for university students in three states in Northern Sudan.

Rahad River Development Organization (RADO)

To promote the political participation of marginalized communities in Gedarif state and raise the overall awareness of the upcoming national elections in Sudan. RADO will conduct a civic and voter education campaign in Gedarif State. RADO will conduct a one-day workshop for 30 parliamentarians and senior staff, and a one-day workshop for government officials. RADO will also develop three short plays that capture the electoral process.

Res Publica

To strengthen the local and international policymakers’ and activists’ understanding of the range of attitudes and opinions held by Darfurian civilians with respect to the necessary conditions for a just and lasting peace in Darfur. Res Publica launched a program, 24 Hours for Darfur, which will conduct public opinion research to convey the views of marginalized populations in Darfur.

Sudan Human Rights Association (SHRA)

To advocate for the protection and recognition of the rights of Sudanese refugees, IDPs, and returnees. The SHRA will continue to monitor the living conditions of refugees in Uganda and southern Sudan. SHRA will convene two five-day paralegal training workshops for a total of 50 participants in Sudan and Uganda. SHRA will continue to produce its quarterly magazine, The Sudan Monitor, which publishes summaries of field tour findings as well as articles on human rights and forced migration.

Sudan Inter-Religious Council (SIRC)

To strengthen the role religious and community leaders play in facilitating peace and reconciliation. The SIRC will continue its efforts to promote reconciliation among different religious communities in Sudan. SIRC will conduct a four-day training-of-trainers workshop in Khartoum for 45 religious and community leaders from neighboring states, IDP camps and nongovernmental organizations in Sudan. SIRC will conduct a three-day regional workshop in Kosti for members of the religious leaders’ communities.

Sudan Self-Help Foundation

To build the capacity of community leaders in Southern Sudan to promote human rights, civic and voter education. The Sudan Self-Help Foundation will conduct three training-of-trainers workshops on human rights, civic and voter education in Central and Western Equatoria State.

Sudan Studies Center (SSC)

To promote political and civic participation among youth, women and marginalized groups, SSC will produce 1,000 copies of its well-known quarterly journal, Sudanese Writings. The Center will organize a two-day symposium for 60-70 participants on “Youth and Political Participation in Sudan” and three two-day workshops for well-experienced activists on electoral laws and procedures. The SSC will continue to hold bi-monthly meetings of the Forum for Young Democrats.

Sudanese Association for Youth Development (SAYD)

To advance voter participation among youth in the upcoming national elections in Sudan’s Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile State. The SAYD will conduct a civic and voter education project for youth in the Nuba Mountains and Blue Nile State. SAYD will conduct two three-day training-of-trainers workshops in Kadugli (Nuba Mountains) and Damazine (Blue Nile State) for thirty participants each from various nongovernmental and community based organizations.

Sudanese Organization for Non-Violence and Development (SONAD)

To promote democracy through nonviolence and conflict transformation in Sudan. SONAD will conduct two basic workshops and one training-of-trainers workshop on achieving democratic transformation through non-violence.

Sudanese Writers Union

To promote democracy and peaceful co-existence through open dialogue. The Sudanese Writers Union will conduct two two-day forums on multiculturalism and democracy for civil society organizations in Khartoum and a two-day training for union members on democratic transformation in Sudan.

Tapari Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society (TMCS)

To empower citizens of southern Sudan with the knowledge and skills to participate in the upcoming national elections. The TMCS will conduct 15 one-day civic and voter education workshops in Western Equatoria State for local farmers who constitute a majority of the state’s rural population. TCMS will also conduct eleven intra-state workshops to help mitigate inter-tribal conflict in southern Sudan.

Teeba Press

To empower local journalists with an understanding of democratic elections, Sudan’s political process, and basic skills for election coverage. The Teeba Press will conduct three workshops for journalists on the role of the media in the upcoming national elections.

To raise awareness among internally displaced populations (IDPs) about the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA), democracy and the upcoming national elections in Sudan. ZWD will conduct five four-day civic and voter education workshops for internally displaced populations on the outskirts of Khartoum and Omdurman.
