Action Group for Health, Human Rights and HIV/AIDS (AGHA)

To empower local civil society organizations to engage in health planning, budgeting and health sector monitoring, and to advocate for improvements to and greater public knowledge about the health sector’s performance. AGHA will familiarize civil society with a monitoring tool to track the use of health resources at the district level and train groups to address irregularities.

Centre for Women in Governance (CEWIGO)

To promote effective women’s political leadership in Uganda. CEWIGO will conduct a two-day training-of-trainers workshop for women drawn from local civil society organizations and seven political parties. CEWIGO will also conduct one three-day regional workshops for participants who intend to run for a seat in government and conduct a workshop for journalists on the importance of women’s participation in an emerging democracy.

Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI)

To monitor and promote human rights in Uganda and the Great Lakes region. FHRI will organize a variety of activities related to human rights monitoring, reporting, and promotion. FHRI will produce thematic reports, organize human rights programs at local universities, and convene an inaugural human rights summer training course.

Integrated Women Development Programme (IWDP)

To enhance the capacity of communities to demand transparency and services from local leaders and promote accountability among local leaders in Kihuura, Hapuyo, Kakabara, and Kyegegwa subcounties of Kyenjojo District. The IWDP will host bi-monthly radio programs to facilitate dialogue between local leaders and citizens in Kyenjojo District. IWDP will also train local council leaders on the basics of transparent and accountable governance and how to lobby higher authorities for better services for their communities.

International Republican Institute (IRI)

To better hold elected officials accountable, IRI will work with activists to develop an advocacy strategy around the issue of employment of persons with disabilities (PWD). The Institute will bring together trade unions, PWD, labor activists and the business community into an effective partnership to advocate for more equal opportunity in employment for PWD and pressure elected leaders to make good on promises to disabled constituents.

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI)
$350,000
To strengthen the Ugandan parliament’s constituency outreach efforts in four targeted districts. NDI will develop and install casework tracking software in parliament to assist members of parliament to more effectively follow requests from constituents. Additionally, NDI will employ part-time staff to assist MPs in using the software and in interacting with citizens at the district level to enhance citizen knowledge of the role and activities of parliament.

National Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights in Uganda (NAFODU)

To enhance the understanding of human rights and democratic processes in southwestern Uganda among rural and urban citizens. NAFODU will produce and broadcast twelve radio programs entitled Manya Obugabe Bwane (Know Your Rights). NAFODU will also organize two roundtable discussions on issues affecting Uganda’s democracy and the state of human rights in southwestern Uganda.

Platform for Labour Action (PLA)

To strengthen existing civic and political participation initiatives of youth and women working in the informal sector of Lira district. PLA will continue to work with previously trained peer educators to build their capacity to interact with elected leaders. At the same time, PLA will work with elected leaders to build their capacity to respond to the increased demands and concerns from their constituents.
