American Center for International Labor Solidarity

To strengthen the Zimbabwean labor movement’s ability to promote democratic laws, government accountability and economic and social justice. Phase IV of the Solidarity Center program in Zimbabwe will focus on enhancing the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Union’s (ZCTU) organizational capacity to conduct outreach and advocacy on behalf of Zimbabwe’s workers. The program will expand upon the ZCTU’s ability to engage with the new Zimbabwe government, and strengthen the ZCTU’s ability to remain abreast of the government’s changing economic and social policies.

Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)

To strengthen the voice of Zimbabwe’s private sector to advocate for market-oriented reforms. CIPE will conduct diagnostic assessments of national-level business groups to determine strengths and weaknesses; organize capacity-building workshops for up to 35 key leaders who represent private sector associations, and support the Business Council of Zimbabwe’s working group to form a national business reform agenda.

Center for Research and Development

To enhance awareness of civil and political rights in Manicaland province, particularly among women, youth and traditional leaders. The Center for Research and Development will organize twenty, one-day workshops for forty participants to discuss the basic tenets of democracy, civil and political rights, human rights and ways for community leaders to protect and promote these rights.

Centre for Community Development in Zimbabwe (CCDZ)

To enhance the capacity of civic leaders to carry out their duties in a democratic, non-partisan manner. CCDZ will organize trainings for local government and traditional leaders to enhance their ability to carry out and understand their duties. CCDZ will also work with constituents to improve their ability to express their demands and concerns to local leaders.

Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA)

To encourage youth participation in local government processes. CHRA will organize a variety of activities including workshops on local government reforms, monthly dialogue and parliamentary advocacy meetings. The meetings will be managed by CHRA, but implemented by the local resident and development associations in the targeted towns and districts.

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition

To enhance the quality of Zimbabwe’s democratic transition by improving civil society’s cooperation. The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition will launch a transitional policy and research initiative that seeks to encourage information sharing among Zimbabwe’s civil society, generate policy alternatives that can be presented to the transitional government and provide useful information that organizations can use in civic education campaigns.

Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI)

To promote public policy discourse and better policies through empirical research of people’s attitudes toward the economy. MPOI will conduct the Zimbabwe Economic and Survival Strategies Survey Round 4 (ZESS 4). It will do so by asking questions retrospectively, prospectively, and in respect of the present economic conditions.

National Constitutional Assembly (NCA)

To promote institutional reform in Zimbabwe that includes the participation of ordinary citizens. The NCA will organize a series of workshops, marches, and trainings themed “Change: What Type of Change for Zimbabwe.” The NCA will seek to raise awareness about the need for a new constitution that respects the independence of the judiciary, parliament, and civil rights.

Savanna Trust

To mobilize community theatre groups within marginalized communities to promote dialogue on democracy, human rights and other development issues. Savanna Trust will work with community based theatre groups to write and produce plays that will enhance citizens’ understanding of emerging political issues during the transitional period such as constitutional reform, peace, justice and human rights.

Student Christian Movement of Zimbabwe (SCMZ)

To promote the non-violent political participation of youth in Zimbabwe’s democratic transition. SCMZ will launch a campaign of intensive advocacy and lobbying to encourage students to embrace the basic tenets of conflict transformation, peace building and reconciliation regardless of political affiliation. The campaign will target youth in tertiary institutions and communities throughout Zimbabwe.

Students Solidarity Trust (SST)

To develop a common education reform agenda that will encourage people to participate in democratic processes. SST will launch a national campaign advocating for the government to domesticate laws guaranteeing the right to education and promoting the inclusion of the right to education in the new constitution. SST will target students, parents, teachers and elected officials.

Youth Agenda Trust

To create a platform for sustained dialogue and tolerance among youth in marginalized communities as a way of ensuring their positive participation in politics. Youth Agenda will facilitate the creation of and support the activities of Community Sustained Dialogue Teams to organize meetings and activities within their communities promoting democracy and non-violence.

Youth Forum

To foster youth participation in both local and national politics. Working in Masvingo Province, Youth Forum will plan a series of events for youth to learn about democratic institutions, problems and practices of a democracy, and how to engage in advocacy and lobbying. Youth Forum will organize trainings, focus group discussions, and visits to parliament and local councils for youth.

Zimbabwe Community Development Trust (ZCDT)

To organize communities for self-driven conflict resolution and constructive dialogue towards social, economic, political participation and transformation. The ZCDT will work with communities that have been affected by politically motivated violence to develop structures such as task forces or committees that will develop agendas for continuous community-led conflict resolution dialogues.

Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN)

To promote the creation of a legal framework and election culture conducive to the holding of free and fair elections in Zimbabwe. The ZESN will monitor the political environment to ascertain if it will be possible to hold truly free and fair elections, as well as advocate for comprehensive electoral reforms.

Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights)

To enhance human rights activism among grassroots communities, particularly in governance related issues. ZimRights will launch a campaign to increase awareness about the GPA and the possibilities it contains for security sector reform and increasing respect for the rule of law and human rights in Zimbabwe. Citizens will also be encouraged to participate in upcoming government processes such as constitutional reform.

Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)

To develop a support network for human rights defenders who are willing and able to promote and protect human rights. ZLHR will provide legal assistance to human rights defenders and work with youth in secondary schools to build their understanding of human rights.

Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP)

To develop a secure information management system the ZPP will conduct an assessment of its current system to identify gaps and make recommendations for improvements. ZPP will purchase scanners to scan approximately 25,000 incident sheets to preserve them for historical purposes and possible use during a national truth and reconciliation process. ZPP will also conduct information management training for field staff and national office staff.
