Art for Accountability and Social Activism

To enhance accountability and social activism using art and social media and to empower young artists and entrepreneurs to pursue creative projects that promote democracy and good governance. The organization will train youth to use art as a tool for activism and will provide seed funding to promising young “artivists” for projects.

 

Developing a Constitution Curriculum

To promote active and constructive citizen engagement, the organization will produce civic education tools that will refocus citizens’ attention on Kenya’s 2010 constitution by highlighting the changes to their rights and responsibilities, encouraging them to think critically about the roles of elected leaders, and promoting a unifying message. The project will seek to bridge the gap between traditional civil society and arts-based activist community to facilitate the production of high-impact civic education messages.

 

Enhancing Civic Participation and Monitoring the 2017 Election

To promote meaningful civic participation in the run up to the 2017 Kenyan national elections, the organization will screen social justice-themed documentaries and organize community discussions. In cases where citizen groups are interested in following up with direct action, the grantee will provide strategic advice and help link them with key institutions and partner organizations. The organization will also train videographers and activists on how to document the election process so as to expose any abuses.

 

Gender Inclusivity through Media

Media Focus on Africa Foundation

To promote an inclusive political process and address representational gaps of women in two counties in Kenya. The grantee will train female candidates on how to engage with the media and develop campaigns that address constituent concerns. The organization will also engage with editors, radio show hosts, and community leaders in order to counter negative portrayals of women and promote an enabling media environment for all political candidates.

 

Monitoring the Kenyan Parliament

To promote legislative transparency and accountability, the organization will provide timely, accurate, and objective information about the Kenyan parliament. By increasing parliamentary transparency and strengthening the public’s understanding of parliamentary processes and roles, the organization will play a critical role in promoting citizens’ participation in the democratic process. It will also be a vital resource for civil society organizations engaged on policy and budgetary issues and media organizations that cover parliament.

 

Promoting Democracy through Strengthened Trade Union Advocacy

To strengthen Kenya’s democracy during this transition period of devolved government by contributing to the transparent and democratic development of the country; address youth labor rights violations in Kamukunji through community-based advocacy with business community in regard to labor law compliance; and support the gender integration and women’s empowerment objectives of COTU-Kenya’s Women’s Committee. The center’s program will also assist COTU-K delegates to analyze and reach consensus on the congressional priorities including promoting youth in the leadership structure.

 

Promoting Transparency and Accountability in County Government Budgets

To strengthen the institutional capacity, sustainability and management skills of Kenya’s civil society organizations, to enhance the ability of coalition partners to advocate for budget reforms, to promote greater Nyeri county government accountability on the implementation of the budget, and to develop a Kenyan institute of non-profit management to provide long-term capacity building to Kenyan business associations and non-profits. The institute’s partners and a network of civil society organizations will provide input to county governments on the proposed budgets and monitor actual expenditures.

 

Promoting Youth Participation in Leadership and Governance at Grassroots Levels
