Helping Democracy Deliver – Addressing Governance and Youth Unemployment

To address the issue of youth unemployment in South Africa, the institute and its local partner will conduct policy assessments and focus group research in three provinces, in addition to conducting interviews with political leaders to identify gaps in youth employment policies. The institute will then work with political parties to address those gaps in provincial and national-level platforms. The research findings will also provide a basis for dialogues centered on establishing targeted policy approaches that lead to greater economic opportunities for young South Africans.

To address the issue of youth unemployment in South Africa, the institute will work with the South African Institute on Race Relations to conduct policy assessments and focus group research in three provinces, as well as key informant interviews with political leaders to identify gaps in youth employment policies, and work with political parties to address those gaps in provincial and national-level platforms. The research findings will provide a basis for dialogues centered on establishing targeted policy approaches that lead to greater economic opportunities for young South Africans while strengthening democratic delivery in South Africa as well as in other African countries through regional programs with the AU.
