Legal Aid

To promote the rule of law through strategic legal education and social justice initiatives. The project will train lawyers and coordinate their social justice advocacy and legal intervention work, particularly on the areas of land rights, human trafficking, and religious freedom.

Asia Center for Human Rights (ACHR)
To strengthen regional awareness and cooperation on cross-border human rights issues in the Asia region. ACHR will hold an annual forum that will gather both governmental and non-governmental representatives to increase cooperation in responding to and preventing human rights abuses in the Asia region. ACHR will also run an annual workshop to raise awareness among young activists about regional and universal norms through which to address human rights problems.

American Center for International Labor Solidarity
To promote freedom of association and build the capacity of auto sector trade unions in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Working with the United Auto Workers, the International Metalworkers Federation, and regional trade union partners, the Solidarity Center will organize a regional exchange program, implement a collective-bargaining training program, and conduct a workshop on public policy advocacy.

American Center for International Labor Solidarity
To promote the rule of law in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and China. The Solidarity Center and its partners will conduct labor law research, and provide technical support to legal activists, scholars, community groups, and NGOs in five countries in the region.

American Center for International Labor Solidarity
To broaden the civic participation of workers in Southeast Asia. The Solidarity Center will promote labor law reform and assist Burmese trade unions in providing services to members; conduct a research and capacity-building project for Burma’s ethnic groups; conduct a series of seminars for local union leaders in Malaysia on democratic rights; and produce research on workers’ issues that can be used to enforce country-specific labor laws and strengthen “best practices” in Vietnam’s private sector .

Asian Network for Free and Fair Elections (ANFREL)
To strengthen the capacity of domestic election monitoring bodies in the Asia region and to increase cooperation and regional solidarity. ANFREL will work closely with domestic election-monitoring groups to organize short and long-term observations of targeted elections. It will organize workshops on election monitoring, voter education, election systems, and good governance.

Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)
To increase awareness and implementation of corporate governance best practices in the development finance sector across the Asia-pacific region. CIPE, in partnership with the Association of Development Finance Institutions in Asia and the Pacific (ADFIAP), will organize five training seminars on corporate governance best practices for development bank compliance officers. ADFIAP will also publish a risk management and financial disclosure toolkit that describes how to use risk management practices to improve corporate governance.

Southeast Asian Press Alliance (SEAPA)
To promote press freedom and to improve the professionalism and capability of journalists throughout the region. SEAPA will continue many of its successful training and internship programs and its East Timorese, Cambodian, and Burmese freedom of expression programs.
