To enhance the capacity of local journalists in professional reporting and local media development, to support and defend journalists and media freedom, and to promote legislative and institutional reform of the media sector. Training workshops will support the development of local journalists and reports will identify policy recommendations to strengthen media freedom. In addition, free legal assistance will be provided to media professionals and institutions.

 

Advocating Rights of Workers with Disabilities

Human Rights

To protect and advocate the rights of people with disabilities. Disability community leaders will receive training on rights and access to opportunities from a legal perspective, and will gain advocacy campaign skills to conduct two campaigns to advocate for solutions to rights violations. The project will also provide legal-aid assistance for workers with disabilities who are victims of violations.

 

Civil Society Support

Democratic Ideas and Values

To provide opportunities for civil society leaders to continue meaningful civic engagement and preserve the capacity and voice of civil society; and to facilitate dialogue among civil society leaders on the future of civil society and the protection of basic rights and freedoms. The project will organize regional or international fellowships for civil society leaders and host a series of dialogue sessions to assess the challenges, opportunities and strategies for reforms in Egypt.

 

Combating Hate Speech and Incitement

To counter hate speech and incitement to violence in media and public life. An annual report will monitor and document the prevalence of incitement in the media and public statements and raise awareness of the frequency and types of hate speech. Strategic litigation will ensure proper enforcement of national laws related to hate speech and incitement to violence.

 

Defending Civil Society

Accountability

Supplement: $10,000

To defend the rights of civil society activists and human rights defenders. The project will provide legal consultation and defense for activists, civil society representatives, and human rights defenders throughout the country. It will also offer legal assistance and representation in detention centers, public prosecution interrogations, and court proceedings.

 

Defending Land and Housing Rights

Accountability

$35,000

To protect land and housing rights and to empower local communities on priorities and alternative urban development plans. The project will monitor, disseminate information and advocate for robust transparency standards regarding public-private development project plans in Egypt. Community members will engage in identifying alternative policies and solutions to provide greater citizen voices in development projects. Regular reports will highlight the status of land and housing rights in Egypt.

 

Defending Media Freedom

To defend media freedom and the rights of media professionals in Egypt. Project activities include three awareness campaigns on violations against journalists and media professionals, two legal analysis papers to assist activists in understanding the legal and regulatory environment, and pro bono legal support to journalists and media professionals.

 

Defending Media Freedom

To promote greater transparency of legislative and executive actions related to media freedom and support inclusive policy recommendations. The project will monitor and disseminate information about new decisions, regulations and legislation related to media freedom. Diverse stakeholders will convene to assess developments and identify recommendations to protect media space.

 

Enhancing Citizen Oversight of Local Government

To strengthen citizen oversight of and engagement with local officials on good governance. Four local committees will monitor local government and advocate for accountability and transparency. The grantee will train committee members to assess the performance of local officials and hold town hall meetings on public services with diverse stakeholders.

 

Human Rights Monitoring and Documentation

To promote and advocate for human rights in Egypt. Regular reports and publications will monitor and raise awareness of the state of human rights in Egypt, and will provide regular information to media outlets on human rights issues. Legal assistance and training workshops will support victims of human rights violations.

 

Monitoring Freedom of the Press and Violations against Media

To support and defend journalists and media freedom. The project will monitor the rights of media professionals and organizations and issue regular updates on violations and related developments. Monthly and annual reports will inform advocacy and support legal efforts to defend and protect the rights of media professionals and institutions.

 

Preserving Independent Civil Society

To foster and strengthen independent civil society leaders’ ability to conduct research and to support freedom of association. A team of local researchers will collect and analyze data on the challenges facing civil society organizations. The research will be published in a series of reports and articles and used to better inform efforts to defend civic space and freedom of association.

 

Promoting Budget Transparency

To promote budget accountability and transparency. The project will monitor, analyze and disseminate information about Egypt’s national budget allocations to the general public. Monthly bulletins, an annual report and regular social media engagement will highlight key issues and debates on public spending and allocations and advocate for practical measures to improve budget accountability and transparency.

 

Promoting Dialogue on Human Rights and Democracy Issues

To educate and promote dialogue amongst citizens on political, social, cultural, and human rights issues through digital media. The project will include the production of 48 weekly multimedia products that explain various citizen rights protected by Egyptian law. Segments will cover such topics as freedom of association, corruption, transparency, violence against women, censorship, and privacy rights. The messages will be disseminated through social media and traditional media outlets.

 

Promoting Legislative Transparency

To promote legislative transparency through public participation in the legislative process. The project will monitor and report on proceedings in Parliament and its sub-committees and convene key stakeholders for discussions on proposed legislation. Regular parliamentary monitoring reports published online will disseminate parliamentary news and updates. In addition, legislative recommendations that emerge from stakeholder discussions will be shared with policymakers.

 

Promoting Participatory and Effective Local Governance

To strengthen local governance and participatory democracy. The project will strengthen the skills of municipal election candidates on local governance, participatory democracy, and government oversight mechanisms to promote participatory mechanisms for government and citizens to cooperate in finding solutions for community priorities. Trainings and reports will also teach citizens about oversight of municipal election processes, coalition-building and participatory institutions, and local governance.

 

Promoting Pluralism and Countering Media Prejudice

To promote pluralism and counter discrimination. This project will focus on advocacy efforts to counter discrimination in alignment with the Egyptian Constitution. Project activities will include monitoring and documenting discriminatory media coverage, collecting testimonies from victims of discrimination, mobilizing volunteers on media monitoring, and holding a workshop for lawyers on relevant legislation.

 

Promoting Policy Dialogues

Strengthening Political Institutions

To strengthen public policymaking and promote and facilitate dialogue on public policy issues. A training workshop and seminars will enhance policy stakeholders’ ability to monitor, evaluate, and influence public policies in better service of the needs of the Egyptian people. Participants will also develop mechanisms for ongoing policy discussions and platforms.

 

Promoting Women and Youth Participation in Local Governance

To enhance youth and women’s political participation in local governance. Five trainings will be held for youth and women on local governance and these participants will organize 15 community meetings about good governance, citizen monitoring, and social initiatives. The trainees and citizens will launch social initiatives on issues and priorities identified in community meetings. In addition, the grantee will hold a legal workshop on stronger representation of youth and women in local governance, draft legislative amendments, and advocate adoption in parliament.

To advocate support for a robust and active civil society. A media campaign will promote an alternative and positive message about the role of Egyptian civil society, including its importance to economic development and protecting citizen rights. Policy papers and meetings will inform and convene politicians and civil society organizations about Egypt’s NGO law and promote consideration of civil society needs.

A series of training workshops will strengthen youth community leadership to better advocate for and serve community needs, conduct media outreach, and better manage voluntary initiatives and resources. The project will support advocacy efforts for improved service delivery and solutions to urgent community needs. A study, listening sessions, advocacy campaign and report will inform local government of citizen needs and satisfaction on local health, environment and accountability issues. 

 

Strengthening the Independent Voice of the Private Sector II

To strengthen the independent voice of the private sector and to engage the public and private sectors in dialogue to advance free market economic reforms. Technical expertise and support will assist a local business association in implementing its organizational reform plan. A comprehensive review of legislation governing Egypt’s investment climate will inform reform efforts.

 

Support Platform for Civil Society Activists

To support and strengthen civil society organizations and human rights defenders. An online resource portal will provide and share key information, best practices, opportunities, and relevant news and updates that are beneficial to civil society and human rights activists. One-on-one consultations will be available to activists to provide assistance with their work.

To promote the right of association and to build the capacity of a network of independent associations. Training workshops will strengthen the management, strategic planning, advocacy, and campaigning skills of associations. A convening of senior association leaders will facilitate the drafting and enhancement of strategic planning documents of participating associations.

 

Supporting Women’s Political Leadership and Participation

To strengthen women’s political leadership and participation in local governance. Women community leaders will lead community dialogue sessions on local priorities in their cities and villages. The sessions will facilitate community members’ advocacy efforts through local mechanisms. Additionally, training workshops will prepare 40 women candidates to develop campaigning skills for upcoming local elections.

To promote women’s leadership within political parties. The program will continue to develop and strengthen women’s political skills, visibility and agenda-setting strategies within political parties. Workshops will include emerging leaders and representatives of diverse Egyptian political parties. A research project will also collate information on women’s party leadership roles.

 

Youth Civic Participation in Upper Egypt

To engage youth in local governance. Two series of workshops will prepare and educate 40 youth interested in running in municipal elections. Topics will include local governance, advocacy campaigns, community engagement, and public budgeting. Participating youth will develop and implement advocacy campaigns to address community priorities related to service delivery and governance.

To promote transparency in public service delivery at the local level. Workshops for young community leaders on local governance and an advanced training on public budgeting and resource allocation will prepare youth to communicate community needs and priorities to local officials. Participants will visit small communities, identify their priorities and needs, and assist them in finding constructive forums through which to communicate to local governments.
