Babiker Badri Scientific Association for Women Studies (BBSAWS)

To create an environment for open dialogue among women, youth, IDPs, and commu­nity leaders in Sudan on the implications of the 2011 referendum and to promote the unity of Sudan. BBSAWS will conduct two-day workshops on the referendum for key stakeholders in southern Su­dan. BBSAWS will also conduct three drama workshops for southern Suda­nese IDPs in and around Khartoum.

Badya Center for Integrated Development Services

To raise awareness on the popular consultation in South Kordofan State, in order to develop a common agenda and mechanisms to ensure equitable distri­bution of wealth and power in Sudan’s north-south border region. To raise awareness about democracy, human rights, and peace-building among cit­izens in the Nuba Mountains. The Badya Centre will continue to conduct its conflict resolution and civic education train­ings, its peace football tournaments for youth and the Theater for Democracy.

Bakhita Radio

To promote sustainable peace and foster civic engagement among south­ern Sudanese populations ahead of the January 2011 referendum. Bakhita will produce a comprehensive package of radio programs targeted towards women, youth and the disabled. The programs will present unbiased and accurate information, and serve as a forum for open and honest dialogue on a variety of issues related to democracy in Sudan.

Conflict Dynamics International (CDI)

To empower civil society in Sudan to engage in informed dialogue on prospects and options for accommodation of political interests and perspectives following the referendum.CDI will catalyze dialogue with­in and between key civil society constituen­cies through bilateral meetings and three one-day seminars on prospects for political accommodation following the referendum.

Gender Center for Research and Training (GCRT)

To encourage greater women’s participa­tion in Sudan’s political processes. GCRT will prepare a conceptual framework on gender and human rights that will include three background papers, and conduct a comprehensive study on the women’s rights agenda within political party programs. The Center will pre­pare a simplified manual on gender and human rights and produce a video.

Global Witness

To transform oil as a catalyst of war into a driver for peace and increase transpar­ency of the Sudanese oil sector during the interim and post-referendum period. Global Witness will produce an eight-page briefing document on oil revenue transparency for the Government of Sudan (GoS), the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS), oil companies, the World Bank, the IMF, UN Security Council, and Sudanese civil society organizations.

Gurtong Trust Peace and Media Project

To build a non-partisan information platform where southern Sudanese can find reliable and useful information about democracy and human rights in order to engage in the reconstruction of a peaceful southern Sudan. The Gurtong Trust Peace and Media Project will publish three issues of Gurtong Focus, a monthly publication that will be circulated in all ten states of southern Sudan. The magazine addresses key issues affecting southern Sudanese in the pre/post-referendum period.

HelaHelp

To encourage greater voter participation in the upcoming national elections in Sudan. The HelaHelp Organization will conduct a six month project to educate potential voters about the electoral process in Khartoum and Blue Nile State, one of the frontline states most vulnerable to conflict. The organization will convene a five-day training workshop for artists, a two-day public performance entitled “Theater of Elections,” and two public voter-educa­tion performances for 4,000 people.

Independent Diplomat, Inc.

To strengthen the Government of South­ern Sudan’s capacity to negotiate peace during the interim and post-referendum period in order to reduce the risk of the resumption of conflict. Independent Diplomat will provide the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) with advice and assistance to meet its diplomatic challenges and recruit a full time Juba representative to access and maintain direct and regular contact with the GoSS.

Kassala Women Development Associations Network

To advance women’s political participation at the local and national level in eastern Sudan. The Kassala Women Development Associations Network will equip leaders of women’s associations from differ­ent localities in Kassala State with the knowledge and skills to effectively par­ticipate in Sudan’s first national election in decades. The Association will organize four seven-day workshops, for a total of 60 participants from member Women Development Associations (WDAs).

Kwoto Cultural Center

To advance democracy and human rights and promote peace and reconciliation in southern Sudan following the January 2011 referendum. A 30-member dance and drama troupe will travel the country to perform 100 shows aimed at foster­ing dialogue on the questions of identity and reintegration for displaced communi­ties. Kwoto will also organize 10 musi­cal concerts and 10 lectures in each of the 10 states of southern Sudan.

Maskadour Charity Society (MCS)

To strengthen the capacity of community leaders from the Dinka and Shilluk tribes to build sustainable peace and resolve conflict in southern Sudan. MCS will convene five consecutive seven-day workshops in the greater Malakal area for a total of 140 community and civil society leaders. MCS will invite two facilitators, one from the federal ministry of social and cultural affairs, to administer the training manual and help guide participant discussion.

Multi Media Training Center

To empower young journalists with the knowledge and skills to actively participate in Sudan’s democratic transformation. The Multi Media Training Center will conduct four five-day training sessions in basic journalism, a two-day seminar to follow up with all trained participants and a field visit to Eastern Equatoria State. All four courses will discuss the role of media in conflict resolution, mitigation, and prevention.

Mundri Relief and Development Association (MRDA)

To raise awareness about the referendum for self-determination in southern Sudan and advance participation, and access to the flow of information. To strengthen local and state level politicians’ commitment to community development in southern Sudan. MRDA will continue to provide voter education to citizens in southern Sudan in preparation for the 2011 referendum and to build stronger links between local com­munities and government representatives.

Mutawinat Benevolent Company

To enhance access to legal services for disadvantaged women and juve­niles and promote political participation among women and youth in Sudan. Mutawinat will continue to provide direct legal assistance to disadvan­taged women and youth. Mutawinat will conduct a civic education workshop for relevant departments in the govern­ment of Sudan, and organize six civic education training sessions for univer­sity students, women in prisons and in IDP camps, and NGOs and CBOs.

National Center for Peace and Development (NCPD)

To promote a fair and free election, greater participation, democracy, and human rights in Sudan. NCPD will build the technical capacity of civil society organizations and political parties for effective participa­tion in the upcoming national elections. As the local chapter for Transparency International, the Center will also conduct a workshop on mitigating corruption.

Rahad River Development Organization (RADO)

To promote democratic ideals and prac­tices and raise political participation among the general public in Gedarif State. RADO will develop a training curricu­lum that will engage participants in the practice of democracy in everyday life. RADO will convene one TOT for univer­sity students, five public discussions for the populations in the five cluster areas, and five two-day workshops for women, nomads and pastoralists, tribal and politi­cal leaders, and trade union leaders.

Small Arms Survey (SAS)

To empower civil society organizations and policy-makers with the knowledge and tools to address the challenges associated with security sector reform during Sudan’s interim and post-referendum period. SAS will conduct a Human Security Baseline Assessment (HSBA) which will analyze the Sudan People’s Liberation Army’s ongo­ing transformation process with reference to the army’s mandate and de facto roles pre- and post-referendum. SAS will com­mission research over a 25-day period.

Sudan Human Rights Association (SHRA)

To promote the respect and observance of human rights for Sudanese refugees in Uganda and IDPs in southern Sudan. SHRA will continue to monitor the living conditions of refugees and IDPs. SHRA will convene two five-day paralegal train­ing workshops for 50 participants in Sudan and Uganda. SHRA will continue to produce its quarterly magazine, The Sudan Monitor, which publishes sum­maries of field tour findings, and articles on human rights and forced migration.

Sudan Inter-Religious Council

To promote increased coordination and cooperation between state authorities, religious and community leaders, and po­tential political leaders in Sudan. The Sudan Inter-Religious Council (SIRC) will conduct three-day workshops for 35 religious and community leaders in Nyala, the capital of Southern Darfur, and Kadugli, the capital of Southern Kordofan State. Discussions will center on ways that these groups can cooperate to foster peace in Sudan.

Sudanese Development Initiative (SUDIA)

To build the technical capacity and strengthen the cooperation between fledgling civil society organizations and independent media outlets in Sudan’s interim period. SUDIA will develop the communication capacity of five CSOs working in Khartoum and North Kordo­fan. SUDIA will organize a three-day conference entitled Future Search that will bring together 40 stakeholders to discuss the role of media in civil society.

Sudanese Organization for Non-Violence and Development (SONAD)

To strengthen the role of civil society organizations in civic and human rights issues and promote peaceful co-existence between different ethnic and religious groups in Sudan. SONAD will conduct two basic workshops and one Training of Train­ers (TOT) workshop on achieving demo­cratic transformation through non-violence.

Sudanese Studies Centre (SSC)

To promote political and civic participa­tion, peace and reconciliation among youth and marginalized groups in Sudan. SSC will promote a culture of democ­racy and citizenship in Sudan through a variety of scholarly publications, research, and events. SSC will continue to hold bi-monthly meetings of the Forum for Young Democrats, which was created with NED assistance two years ago.

Teeba Press

To build the capacity of journalist and media organizations in Sudan in order to promote democracy, media freedom, and achieve a greater level of professional­ism during the pre- and post-referendum period. Teeba Press will establish a media resource center for journalists in Khartoum. The resource center will serve as a clearinghouse of informa­tion and technology for these emerging journalists by providing them access to a number of updated publications, books, magazines, periodicals, films and CDs.

Zenab for Women Development (ZWD)

To increase women farmers’ knowledge about their basic rights and to encourage their participation in the political processes and economic development of Sudan. ZWD will organize five three-day workshops on civic education and economic development for 250 women farmers in Gedarif State.
