Today, there is strong bipartisan support for the idea that aiding people struggling for democracy abroad serves the U.S. national interest -- and the fact that "this support exists at a time of sharp partisan division here at home is worthy of note." more

Russia   
The Yuri Levada Analytical Center, a NED partner since 2009, has produced some of the most important public polling in Russia The Russian Dumafor almost a decade. NED hosts Levada analyst Denis Volkov at a Sept. 14 event. more

 

The World Affairs Journal article "Russia's 'Election': The Games, the Truncheons, and the Opposition" puts Levada Center research to use in its analysis of upcoming elections. more

  

Vietnam    

Vo Van Ai, founder of NED grantee Vietnam Committee on Human Rights, received the prestigious Special Prize for Freedom from the Italian organization Società Libera. more 
 

Nepal   

Suvash DarnalNED mourns the tragic death of Nepalese democracy and human rights activist Suvash Darnal, who was killed in August in a highway accident outside Washington, DC. Darnal was founder and managing director of the Samata Foundation, a Kathmandu-based NED grantee. more

 

In memory of Suvash, NED will host a memorial event on "Securing Dalit Rights and Building Democracy in Nepal: The Legacy of Suvash Darnal," on Sept. 14. Larry Diamond will lead a distinguished panel of experts. more 

 

Parliamentary Forum for Democracy

House Speaker John Boehner will be among the US Members of Congress who will participate in the Parliamentary Forum for Democracy's celebration of the International Day of Democracy on Sept. 15 in the Cannon House Office Building. more  

 

Libya

Laith Kubba, NED Senior Director for the Middle East and North Africa, is highlighted in "Worldview: What Libya can learn from Iraq," in The Philadelphia Inquirer online. more  

 

Moldova  
NED hosted a panel to commemorate two decades of Moldovan Independence on "Moldova's Transition: 20 Years of Challenges and Successes." more

  

Belarus   
NED Senior Director for Europe Rodger Potocki wrote "Belarus: A Tale of Two Elections" for the July 2011 issue of the Journal of Democracy. more

 

Poland   
NED's early relationship with the Solidarity movement in Poland was highlighted at a recent Wilson Center event. Carl Gershman spoke on Solidarity's rich legacy and global impact.  more 

  

NED Mourns Democratic Union Stalwart 

William Doherty Jr., a leading advocate of democratic trade unionism, passed away in August at the age of 84. more
