2012 Democracy Award

Aung Sun Su Kyi holding Democracy AwardAung Sung Suu Kyi honors Burmese democracy movement, accepts NED award after ten years

On Sept. 20, famed Burmese democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi joined members of Congress at a Capitol Hill ceremony to pay tribute to Burma's democracy movement, which was honored with the National Endowment for Democracy's 2012 Democracy Award.

 

Other special guests who made remarks honoring the Burmese activists included Sen. John McCain, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, Rep. Joe Crowley, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, and Under Secretary of State Maria Otero. more

 

Suu Kyi also accepted an award that NED presented to her and the National League for Democracy in May 2000, on the tenth anniversary of Burma's stolen 1990 elections. In 2000, Suu Kyi was barred from leaving Burma and unable to accept the Award in person. The Irrawaddy featured her remarks. more

 

The Democracy Award ceremony was preceded by a panel discussion on "Advancing Democracy in Burma: New Challenges and Opportunities," which featured Democracy Award honorees. Video is available online. more

Seventh AssemblyWorld Movement 7th Assembly draws democracy activists from around the world   

The World Movement for Democracy held its Seventh Assembly in Peru under the theme "Democracy for All: Ensuring Political, Social, and Economic Inclusion."

 

Nearly 500 democracy activists from around the world participated in more than 30 workshops and panels geared towards helping them navigate the challenges of democracy work. view full conference agenda

 

At the Assembly's concluding session, participants honored the courageous struggles of three outstanding groups of activists.  Peru's former President Alejandro Toledo presided over the presentations of the Democracy Courage Tributes to the Human Rights Defenders in Bahrain, the Advocates for the Rights of Sexual Minorities Worldwide, and the Pro-Democracy Movement in Cuba.  more

 

Vietnam

Former Reagan-Fascell Democracy Fellow Le Quoc Quan was featured prominently in an Associated Press story on violent internet crackdowns in Vietnam. more 

 

Burma

NED Senior Director for Asia Brian Joseph was a recent guest on Al Jazeera's Inside Story discussing the current crisis in Burma's western state of Rakhine. more

 

Yu JieChina
Dissident writer Yu Jie, a former vice-president of NED grantee the Independent Chinese PEN Center, received the Train Foundation's Civil Courage Award. more    

 

Pakistan 

Dr. Fouzia Saeed, founder of NED grantee Mehergarh and currently a Reagan-Fascell fellow, was honored by the Oxi Day Foundation for her courageous action for freedom and democracy. NED 2008 Democracy Award recipient Chen Guangcheng was also honored. more 

 

Russia

Miriam Lanskoy, NED Director for Russia and Eurasia programs, discussed "New Russian Laws - Tightening the Noose on Free Speech" with the Broadcasting Board of Governors. more

 

Liberia

Eddie Jarwolo, director of NED grantee NAYMOTE, recently released the Teaching Guide on Understanding Local Governance in Liberiamore
