The project will facilitate cooperation and coordination among human rights defenders and will foster greater understanding of universal human rights standards and mechanisms used to defend those standards in the international community. Rights defenders will be empowered to implement a broad program of education and capacity-building activities, while also connecting Chinese activists to international human rights actors.

To provide access to uncensored news and commentary about China, and about the Chinese government’s efforts to control the information space. The grantee will work to increase access to information in Chinese cyberspace and nurture a community of influential Internet users. The group will also provide content in English and Chinese to give readers access to important political and social commentary.

 

Defending and Assisting Rights Defenders

To support, aid, and defend human rights defenders and their families. Project activities will include legal aid, direct assistance, and mental health support for human rights defenders and their families, as well as advocacy on behalf of this community.

 

Defending Journalists’ Rights

To increase the capacity of journalists in China and Hong Kong to act as media freedom watchdogs. Activities will include working with journalism associations and individual journalists to foster networks and support between local groups and international advocates by providing training in international standards and practices, as well as facilitating regional engagement in monitoring press freedom in China and distributing advocacy materials.

 

Democratic China Electronic Journal

To provide a platform for debate and intellectual discourse on democratic movements and strategies for democratization in China. Articles by academics, activists, students, and artists about current social and political issues will be published. The group will also maintain space to develop the framework and influence of Charter ’08 and to promote political reform.

 

Empowering Civil Society to Protect Rights

To improve the organizational management and advocacy capacity of NGOs working with marginalized communities. Training programs for NGO staff and volunteers will include workshops on decision-making, management skills, and internal governance processes, and short-term consulting services will be provided to a variety of groups.  Online tools will also be developed and made accessible to the broader community of NGOs.

Activities will include the development and maintenance of a censorship-circumvention web-browser application that will give Chinese citizens access to objective information about developments within their own borders and current events and perspectives around the world, and help foster the use of websites that focus on democracy, human rights, and civil society.

 

Humanitarian Assistance for Human Rights Defenders

To provide financial assistance to human rights activists, rights defenders, and political thinkers who face repression and financial hardship due to their work. Human rights activists and families facing harassment and arrest will receive short-term, emergency aid through the group’s networks.

 

Monitoring Media Freedom

To strengthen understanding about how the Chinese government shapes media and political narratives, both domestically and internationally.  The project will produce the China Media Bulletin, a monthly publication that reports on censorship and the media in China, and will make Chinese and English versions available online and distribute hard copies to targeted audiences. The organization will also develop an activism-resource webpage for individuals seeking opportunities to support freedom of information and the media.

The organization will support legal training on combating torture and other abuses by police. It will work to address discriminatory educational policies and raise awareness with government officials, legal assistance, and engaging the public, and advance more effective and meaningful opportunities for public participation.

 

Strengthening Worker Rights and Representation

To educate workers about labor rights, to empower them to use legal means to protect their rights, and to advocate for labor rights in China. The organization will report on labor rights violations and educate workers on labor law and rights defense through trainings and the production and distribution of written materials. In addition, the organization will seek to expand leadership roles and opportunities for women in the labor rights movement through targeted, NGO staff trainings.

The center and its partners will provide advocacy training and tools to public interest lawyers, NGO workers, entrepreneurs, and youth community leaders, while simultaneously supporting dialogue and network building among these groups.

To provide a platform for intellectual debate and to stimulate discourse on democratization in China. The organization will publish China an online magazine that focuses on international relations, comparative democratization, changing dynamics in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and historical analyses of democratization experiences in Asia.

Sustaining Civil Society in a Repressive Operating Environment

To provide CSOs with access to information, skills, and approaches to manage programs and build organizational capacity in order to adapt to an uncertain operating environment. The institute will conduct training workshops, and support the ongoing development of civil society networks. It will also promote awareness of civic engagement opportunities by supporting networks, and implementing good governance workshops at the local level.
