Through this dual institutional and individualized approach, the institute will contribute to the development of Pakistan’s political parties, making them more responsive, inclusive, and better able to represent voter interests.

Advancing Worker Rights and Social Dialogue

To promote decent work in Pakistan, the center will conduct awareness raising activities for unions and labor rights groups about the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and strengthen their capacity to improve the government’s SDG implementation plan. It will also support an online labor news portal, screen videos for workers to promote organizational strengthening, publish a comprehensive assessment of labor issues, conduct joint union-employer dialogue and policy advocacy, and build women union activists’ leadership and advocacy skills.

Advocacy Campaign for Governance Reforms in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas

To strengthen the effectiveness of advocacy and awareness-raising activities of a civil society network on rule of law and governance reforms in FATA. The grantee will organize a national seminar, carry out a research study on judicial reforms, produce a monthly e-newsletter, conduct a training on the rule of law for civil society organizations, and carry out an advocacy campaign through social media, FM radio, and awareness sessions at the grassroots level.

To enhance the capacity of civil society organizations to promote transparency and accountability in the use of public funds. The organization will carry out a survey and public consultations on the budget-making process in more than 100 districts; organize trainings for civil society organizations on budget analysis and advocacy; and conduct awareness and advocacy campaigns to strengthen accountability. The project will also develop public accountability tools such as citizen budgets and a budget tracker mobile app, as well as commission five research studies.

To strengthen advocacy efforts to ensure equal rights and protections for minority groups. The organization will train activists to carry out a comprehensive advocacy campaign for legal and policy reform in three areas: education, employment, and the establishment of a commission on minority rights. The advocacy campaign will engage elected representatives, government officials, bar councils, civil society and the media at the local, provincial, and national levels.

To facilitate the development of a more tolerant and democratic curriculum in the public education system and raise awareness of issues related to minority political participation. The organization will conduct research on textbook content and conduct a national-level campaign for education reform and minority rights by holding conferences, consultations, and advocacy meetings with key decision makers.

The organization will conduct trainings for youth and the media and then carry out a broad-based civic and voter education campaign in southern Sindh. The campaign will include a series of community meetings, theater performances, public forums where citizens and elected representatives can discuss issues, and the production of informational materials to educate the public about democracy.

The grantee will organize a civic hackathon, conduct fellowship programs, and facilitate the development of open source civic applications that strengthen collaboration and information-sharing between citizens and the government.

To build the capacity of journalists to produce data-driven investigative stories and promote government accountability and transparency. The organization will develop an online data journalism training course and organize a five-day boot camp where journalists will produce investigative stories related to democratic governance. It will also publish investigative stories, open source data sets for use by journalists, and a study on the implementation of right-to-information laws.

To build the capacity of religious leaders to promote democratic principles and values within their communities. The organization will produce a booklet on Islamic perspectives on democracy, conduct capacity-building trainings for religious leaders on democracy across Pakistan, and carry out consultative meetings with religious political parties. Religious leaders involved in the project will carry out community outreach activities to raise public awareness, understanding, and acceptance of democratic norms and values.

Women’s Political Empowerment in Sialkot

To promote women’s empowerment and political participation in Sialkot district. The organization will conduct a series of trainings to strengthen civil society organizations’ capacity to work on women’s political empowerment. In collaboration with these groups, the grantee will launch a civic and voter education campaign in 40 communities across the district to increase voter turnout and political participation among women. It will also conduct trainings and forums to promote public accountability in the post-election period.
