A series of roundtables and trainings will be held on current legal issues, following which the organization will publish analysis and legal information. The organization will work with young lawyers in Azerbaijan to raise their capacity to take cases related to human rights and other topics.

Combatting Forced Labor in Azerbaijan

To document human rights abuses in Azerbaijan. Awareness of violations of labor and social rights will be increased through both domestic and international outreach. An advocacy campaign will be conducted to lobby Azerbaijan’s government to eliminate the practice of using forced labor and child labor. The program will increase the availability of information on the scope of these issues and will produce policy recommendations.

Defending Property Rights

To defend property rights in Azerbaijan. Legal assistance will be provided to victims of illegal property seizures, and online blogs devoted to property rights issues will be maintained. The project will also raise awareness of property rights laws and violations through print publications and social media channels.

To increase public awareness of current events and promote citizen engagement in Azerbaijan. Video news stories, interviews and discussions on political, social and current events topics in will be produced for release on social media. Local activists and bloggers will be particularly targeted for engagement in this project.

Engaging Young Scholars in Democracy Research

To improve the quality and quantity of political and economic discourse in Azerbaijan. A series of research and opinion pieces on topical issues will be produced and published.  The articles will be researched and written by young and established scholars, and will be shared online via a dedicated website.

Human Rights in Azerbaijani Regions

To raise awareness of human rights violations in Azerbaijan. Monitoring will be conducted and legal advice given in five regions of the country. In addition, a series of events on human rights will be held in Baku, where participants will discuss the results of monitoring efforts as well as current topics in human rights.

To increase the capacity of young civil society activists in Azerbaijan and to conduct research and advocacy on the human rights situation in the country. As part of the program, the organization will conduct research to assess the human rights situation, hold trainings for young Azerbaijani activists, and continue its ongoing advocacy with European and international bodies.

Increasing Lawyers’ Capacity

Junior lawyers will be trained on human rights topics, and a network will be supported to foster professional linkages between junior and senior lawyers with the view to facilitate nurturing of a new generation of human rights lawyers.

The program will focus involving new voices in bringing forward issues of human rights abuses, corruption, and other current topics. Young journalists will work with the organization to improve their skills and to gain experience in producing independent online reporting. A cadre of young professionals with journalism skills will be created, thereby increasing the capacity for independent reporting in the country.

Monitoring Economic and Political Rights

To monitor and document economic and political developments in Azerbaijan. Monitoring will be conducted on a variety of themes, including economic developments, government efforts to overcome the current economic crisis, and government-connected businesses profiting from anti-crisis measures. The organization will conduct discussions organized around these themes, and prepare a paper summarizing its findings and recommendations.

Regular news updates will be published, including reporting on political, economic and social topics online, as well as featured articles from expert contributors on key issues. Regional human rights monitors will be trained to identify and document violations of fundamental human rights and a website with monitoring information will be maintained and regularly updated. Reports of particularly notable violations will be documented and shared with partner organizations.

To strengthen the editorial independence of the media and promote freedom of speech. A variety of online content including video pieces, interviews, and citizen journalism will be produced and published.

To support freedom of information in Azerbaijan. News articles, analysis, and commentary will be created by a network of journalists for sharing on the organization’s website and on social media. The pieces will focus on stories not covered by government-controlled media, including economic issues, corruption, human rights violations and social problems.
