The organization will also establish a civil society coalition dedicated to strengthening the rule of law and independence of the judiciary.

The organization will obtain and analyze information about environmental hazards, carry out monitoring, provide legal counsel, help individuals and community organizations, take their cases to domestic and international courts, and publicize its findings.

Human Rights Monitoring

The organization will compile, verify, and publicize a comprehensive list of individuals who have been persecuted for politically motivated reasons The organization will also monitor the conditions of political prisoners’ detention and assist them with the preparation of complaints and appeals.

Legal Support for Regional Media

National Association of TV and Radio Broadcasters of Kazakhstan

To promote the professional development of regional media and encourage the media’s continued editorial independence. The association will provide legal consultations and, when necessary, representation in court; conduct on-site legal and financial audits of media outlets; advocate for increased media freedom; and organize training seminars in the regions.

Promoting and Defending Civil Society

International Legal Initiative Public Foundation

To promote the freedom of association in Kazakhstan and provide legal assistance to civil society organizations and activists. The organization will monitor the implementation of legislation that threatens to restrict independent civil society activity in the country and provide legal aid in cases deemed to be of strategic importance. The information produced by the organization’s monitoring will be published in a report analyzing the current state of civil society in the country.

Promoting and Defending Media Freedom

International Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech “Adil Soz”

To promote the development of freedom of speech and independent media in Kazakhstan. The organization will monitor violations against journalists and media outlets, and publicize its findings through monthly, quarterly, and biannual reports. The organization will provide legal assistance to journalists and media outlets whose rights have been violated and conduct public campaigns in defense of media freedoms. The grantee will also prepare a series of expert studies for use in legal proceedings.

Promoting Civic Education and Human Rights

Freedom House

To promote democratic ideas and values among youth. The organization will update its civic education curriculum and conduct one training-of-trainers activity to expand its cadre of trainers. The organization will then monitor and assist these teams in conducting three additional iterations of its civic education course. Finally, the organization will digitalize and publish Russian and Kazakh-language versions of the course in an online format.   

Promoting Independent Media

Freedom of Information

To promote access to objective, accurate, and timely information about current affairs and politics in Kazakhstan. A Kazakh-language version of a popular news website will be developed and maintained. Short documentary films and video news updates will be produced, published on the site and on social media, and made available for rebroadcast by other media.

School of Human Rights

Youth Information Service of Kazakhstan

To promote the professional development of young new human rights activists. The organization will conduct six introductory seminars for a total of 200 human rights activists in six regions of Kazakhstan on the basics of human rights, civic activism, and national and international human rights legislation. The organization will then conduct an advanced training seminar for 25 activists, seven of whom will implement human rights initiatives and campaigns in their respective regions.
