The project will identify gaps in healthcare access and priorities for expanding access and improving the quality of health services, as well as produce a documentary film to highlight the issue. An advocacy campaign will raise awareness of health rights and propose legal solutions to healthcare access.

 

Advocating Media Freedom

To support and defend journalists and media freedom and to promote legislative and institutional reform of the media sector. The project will enhance the professionalism and legal awareness of local electronic journalists, monitor and document legal actions against the press and media, provide legal support to journalists, and promote legislative reforms.

 

Civil Society Support

To provide opportunities for civil society activists to continue meaningful civic engagement and to enhance civil society organizations’ (CSOs) and activists’ ability to protect themselves against increasing cyberattacks. Fellowships with regional and international CSOs will provide Egyptian civil society activists with opportunities to enhance their work. Digital security tools and resources will allow Egyptian CSOs to protect themselves against cyberattacks.

 

Combating Hate Speech and Incitement

To combat hate speech and incitement to violence in media and public life. Strategic litigation will activate Egyptian law against hate speech and incitement to violence and seek justice for victims. Monitoring and documentation of the prevalence of hate and incitement speech will be used to develop and advocate for improved policies as well as raise public awareness and understanding of the dangers of such speech. 

 

Defending Civic Rights

To defend and protect youth civic engagement. The project will monitor the state of civic rights for youth, disseminate regular updates on related developments through social media, and produce a statistical report to highlight the state of civic space in Egypt. Legal aid to youth will support their participation in civic life.

 

Defending Land and Housing Rights

To promote greater transparency and community engagement on issues of land and housing rights. The project will monitor, disseminate information, and advocate for greater transparency of public-private development project plans in Egypt. It will mobilize and engage community members in identifying alternative policies and solutions and publish quarterly reports and a final comprehensive report on land and housing rights violations.

 

Defending Media Freedom

To defend media freedom and the rights of media professionals. The project will provide legal defense for journalists and bloggers facing legal prosecution because of their work. Two online awareness campaigns will educate citizens and the media sector on the right to access information and violations against journalists and bloggers. A documentary film will highlight conditions for field journalists and photographers, and a study will recommend solutions to barriers of owning media institutions in Egyptian law.

 

Defending Youth Detainees

To support and defend juvenile detainees. The project will provide legal, psychosocial, and medical assistance to young detainees under the age of 18. Lawyers will provide legal representation, counselors or psychologists will provide psychosocial support and mentorship during and post detention, and medical support will be available on a case-by-case basis.

 

Empowering Small Business to Close the Implementation Gap

To engage policymakers, and opinion and business leaders in dialogue to build consensus around the implementation of small and medium enterprise legislation, and to build the capacity of a local partner and its member associations to advocate for policy reform. The project will study the possible benefits of small and medium enterprise legislation and its implementation. It also provide recommendations to facilitate implementation of the forthcoming law.

 

Fostering Democratic Dialogue on Economic Issues

To assist a broad-based spectrum of stakeholders to engage in dialogue around institutional reform priorities. A series of policy seminars will support inclusive, national-level policy dialogue and strengthen the representation of young, civically engaged entrepreneurs in the policymaking process. Building the capacity of local associations and producing case studies of successful private sector-led reform efforts in Egypt will enhance the private sector’s voice in economic reform.

Regular parliamentary monitoring reports published online will focus on parliamentary news and updates. Legislative recommendations that emerge from its discussions with stakeholders and other policymakers will also be disseminated

 

Monitoring Freedom of the Press and Violations against Media

To support and defend journalists and media freedom and build the capacity of a nascent NGO. The project will monitor and document violations against media professionals and organizations and issue daily updates on violations and related developments. Monthly and annual reports will aid in the advocacy on behalf of victims of these violations by domestic and international human rights monitors, legal defense organizations, and volunteer lawyer networks.

To promote accountability and transparency of the Egyptian national budget. Project activities will include monitoring, examining, and analyzing Egypt’s national budget allocation; producing an annual report and making its findings accessible to national and international organizations; distributing press releases on key issues and debates on budget spending and allocation; and advocating for greater budget accountability and transparency.

 

Promoting Cultural Rights

To promote cultural rights and free expression. The project will organize art and cultural activities for youth related to democratic values and hold theater performances to promote cultural diversity and acceptance. The project will also establish and support a network of arts and cultural organizations to advance cultural rights and produce a curriculum for promoting democratic values through art.

 

Promoting Dialogue on Human Rights and Democracy Issues

To educate and promote dialogue amongst citizens on political, social, cultural, and human rights issues through digital media. The project will include the production of 48 weekly multimedia products that explain various citizen rights protected by Egyptian law. Segments will cover such topics as freedom of association, corruption, transparency, violence against women, censorship, and privacy rights. The messages will be disseminated through social media and traditional media outlets.

 

Promoting Equal Access to Health Care

The project will conduct extensive field research with key stakeholders in the health sector to identify problems in health service provision and potential reforms. A press conference will discuss a report on the state of healthcare in Egypt. The project will also convene a discussion on healthcare reforms, disseminate videos to raise awareness on health issues, and provide legal support to individuals denied health services.

 

Promoting Pluralism

To promote pluralism and counter discrimination. This project will focus on advocacy efforts to counter discrimination in alignment with the Egyptian Constitution. Project activities will include monitoring and documenting discriminatory media coverage, producing reports and a film, and providing legal assistance.

A training workshop and seminars will enhance policy stakeholders’ ability to monitor, evaluate, and influence public policies in better service of the needs of the Egyptian people. To advance women’s leadership within professional associations. The project will prepare women professional association members to become candidates in upcoming association elections and to lead advocacy campaigns for greater representation in association leadership positions. It will lead training workshops for association members and support participants in leading advocacy campaigns. In addition, a report on women’s participation in professional association elections will guide strategic planning and advocacy efforts.

 

Strengthening Participation in Community Development

To promote community engagement and leadership among youth. A training workshop will strengthen youth capacity to better advocate for their communities, conduct media outreach, and manage volunteer initiatives and resources. To promote due process and rule of law. The project will provide legal and media support for legal cases to ensure due process and the right to a fair trial. Workshops will bring together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds for discussions on the legal system and desired reforms. Strengthening Women’s Leadership in Professional Associations

To promote women’s leadership in decision-making of professional associations. The project will strengthen the work of young female members and encourage their leadership within professional associations, foster dialogue on challenges facing women inside professional associations, and partner with local journalists to provide coverage on the activities of female members.

 

Supporting Participatory Budgeting

To promote participatory budgeting and fiscal transparency. The project will solicit citizen input on budget allocation and spending priorities. The results will be used to advocate for a national budget process that reflects citizen input on locally identified priorities. The project will also engage civil society to advocate budget priorities with local officials and monitor local expenditures on government services.

 

Supporting Women’s Participation in Local Governance

To strengthen women’s political leadership and participation in local governance. The project will strengthen the community leadership skills of rural women across Egypt, prepare them to participate in local elections, and support them to work with citizens and local government officials to find solutions to community needs. A workshop will also enhance media coverage on women’s issues, activities in the community, and election campaigns.

To engage youth in local governance. The project will strengthen the civic participation in local government issues and budgeting processes.
