The project will help beneficiaries learn about their rights, understand the necessary procedures to receive healthcare and social security, and advocate for the proper application of new legislation on the right to health through civic campaigns, seminars, animation videos, and free legal consultation.

Advocating Media Freedom

To support and defend journalists and media freedom. The project will monitor and document legal actions against the press and media, issue an annual report on patterns and trends in cases against journalists, publish monthly research papers on laws and prominent issues affecting media freedoms, and provide legal services to journalists and media organizations.

Civil Society Fellowships

To provide opportunities for civil society activists to continue meaningful civic engagement and to enhance civil society organizations’ (CSOs) and activists’ ability to protect themselves against increasing cyberattacks. Fellowships with regional and international CSOs will provide Egyptian civil society activists with opportunities to enhance their work. Digital security tools will allow CSOs to protect themselves against cyberattacks.

To provide opportunities for civil society leaders to continue meaningful civic engagement and preserve the capacity and voice of civil society; and to facilitate dialogue among civil society leaders on the future of civil society and the protection of basic rights and freedoms. The project will organize regional or international fellowships for civil society leaders and host a series of dialogue sessions to assess the challenges, opportunities and strategies for reforms in Egypt.

Defending Civic Space

To defend and protect youth civic engagement. The project will monitor the state of civil rights for youth, disseminate regular updates on related developments through social media, and produce a report to highlight prominent issues affecting civic space. Legal aid to youth will support their participation in civic life.

Defending Land and Housing Rights

To promote greater transparency and community engagement on issues of land and housing rights. The project will monitor, disseminate information, and advocate for greater transparency of public-private development project plans in Egypt. It will mobilize and engage community members in identifying alternative policies and solutions and publish quarterly reports and a final comprehensive report on land and housing rights violations.

Defending Media Freedom

To defend media freedom and the rights of media professionals. The project will provide legal defense for journalists and bloggers facing legal prosecution because of their work. A study will analyze a new media regulatory body and its effect on media freedoms in Egypt. A training will support a small group of journalists and bloggers to organize an advocacy campaign on a prominent media rights issue.

Defending Youth Detainees

To support and defend youth political detainees and prisoners. The project will provide legal, psychosocial, and medical assistance to youth detained or imprisoned on politically motivated charges. Lawyers will be assigned to provide legal representation, counselors or psychologists will provide psychosocial support and mentorship during and post detention, and medical and other support will be provided on a case-by-case basis.

Enhancing Accountability

To enhance accountability. The project will enhance the expertise and engagement of civil society activists and academics on government oversight mechanisms for international commitments through a four-day training. The project will also support participating academics and civil society activists in creating and implementing plans to advocate adherence to international commitments.

Enhancing Participatory Democracy

To strengthen local governance and participatory democracy and to defend the rights of civil society activists. The project will train and support local citizens to use participatory methods to address governance issues in their communities. A network of lawyers will be established and trained to provide pro bono legal support to civil society activists. Reports will be published on local governance issues and the political and legal environment.

To strengthen due process and the right to a fair trial. The project will train young lawyers on lawful trial procedures and trial monitoring. The lawyers will subsequently monitor trials against civil society activists and organizations. The project will publish reports that highlight the extent to which defendants received a fair trial. The project will also provide legal defense and support for individuals accused of charges related to the freedom of expression.

To promote freedom of association. The project will produce monitoring reports on the state of freedom of assembly and association and disseminate their findings to civil society. The project will also identify and advocate recommendations to key decision-makers and promote a more enabling legal environment for the freedom of assembly and association.

To strengthen access to information on human rights violations. The project will collect and archive government, independent, and public records on human rights violations and disseminate three annual reports through social media and its website. The database will be available to the public for use in advocacy and legal cases.

Inclusive Internet Governance

To promote open and inclusive internet governance. The project will foster a diverse community of stakeholders concerned with issues of internet governance through regular meetups, public events, and a series of publications. The project will also help establish an agenda on internet governance issues for future advocacy efforts.

Legislative Transparency

To promote transparency through public participation in the legislative process. The project will monitor and report on proceedings in Parliament and its sub-committees and convene key stakeholders for discussions on proposed legislation. Through regular parliamentary monitoring reports published online, the group will disseminate parliamentary news and updates. In addition, the group will disseminate legislative recommendations that emerge from its discussions with stakeholders and other policymakers.

To support and defend journalists and media freedom. The project will monitor the rights of media professionals and organizations and issue regular updates on violations and related developments. Monthly and annual reports will inform advocacy and support legal efforts to defend and protect the rights of media professionals and institutions.

Nonresidential Fellowships

Democratic Ideas and Values

To support and amplify the voices of Egyptian thought leaders on critical issues related to democratic development in Egypt. The program will create six nonresidential fellowships for Egyptian researchers, scholars, and activists. The fellows will receive professional coaching to develop their research and writing skills and contribute analyses on various topics related to democratization in Egypt in Arabic and English.

Promoting Accountability on Environmental and Health Rights

To promote accountability on environmental and health rights. The project will gather citizen feedback on issues related to environmental and public health issues, engage youth on advocacy campaigns to bring attention to the raised issues, and collaborate with government officials to provide recommendations to resolve the issues and follow-up on their implementation.

Promoting Dialogue on Human Rights and Democracy

To educate and promote dialogue among citizens on political, social, cultural, and human rights issues through digital media. The project will establish a monitor on the state of democracy and human rights in Egypt and produce reports to assess the democratic transition in Egypt. The project will also produce multimedia products that illustrate the findings of the reports and explain various citizen rights protected by Egyptian law, such as freedom of association and expression, transparency, and privacy rights.

Promoting Equal Access to Health Care

To promote equal access to adequate healthcare. The project will conduct extensive field research with key stakeholders in the health sector to identify problems in health service provision and potential reforms. A press conference will discuss a report on the state of healthcare in Egypt. The project will also convene a discussion on healthcare reforms, disseminate videos to raise awareness on health issues, and provide legal support to individuals denied health services.

Promoting Leadership in Local Governance

To enhance youth and women’s political leadership in local governance. The project will prepare women and youth interested in local elections to become leaders in local governance and to build local coalitions. The trainees will present their personal stories and their priority issues to their communities at public forums.

Strengthening a Platform for Independent Information

To strengthen access to information on corruption and approaches to combating it. The project will support an independent digital platform that disseminates information related to corruption, transparency, accountability, and democratic transitions more broadly. The platform will provide a forum for public debate and discussion on these issues.

To support human rights lawyers defending civil and political rights. The project will produce legal research and analysis on new laws and amendments concerning civil society and freedom of association, build the capacity of young human rights lawyers on these issues, and support them to provide free legal aid to affected civil society activists.

To support youth activists promoting local governance reform and to defend the rights of civil society activists. The project will train youth on local administration and local governance issues and support them in conducting advocacy campaigns to address socio-economic problems in their communities. It will also create and train a network of lawyers to provide pro-bono legal support to civil society activists.

To promote community engagement in local decision-making. The project will support community leaders advocating citizen needs and priorities through community meetings that address local governance issues, and outreach and follow-up with local officials on citizen needs. The project will also bring together representatives from different communities to share their experiences and identify solutions to local priorities.

To promote impartiality and transparency in trial processes. The project will provide legal and media support for individuals charged with politicized crimes to ensure due process and the right to a fair trial. Three workshops will bring together stakeholders from diverse backgrounds for discussion on the legal system and recommended reforms. Participants will then be connected with and integrated into an initiative to promote legal reforms.

The program will provide technical and financial support to CSOs for institutional development and sustainability. In addition, it will provide training and consultations for CSO partners on overcoming operational and legal challenges to increase their efficiency, effectiveness, and impact within the new context in which they operate.

To support and build the capacity of civil society organizations (CSOs). The program will provide technical and financial support to CSOs for institutional development and sustainability. In addition, it will include a training-of-trainers workshop on digital security. Trainees will subsequently conduct digital security assessments for local CSOs and assist them in developing digital security plans.

Supporting Participatory Budgeting

To promote participatory budgeting and fiscal transparency. The project will solicit citizen input on budget allocation and spending priorities. The results will be used to produce policy papers that will provide recommendations to ease hardships of economic reforms and to advocate for a national budget process that reflects citizen input on locally identified priorities. The project will also engage civil society to advocate budget priorities with local officials and monitor local expenditures on government services.

Supporting Women’s Participation in Local Governance

To strengthen women’s political leadership and participation in local governance. The project will strengthen the community leadership skills of rural women across Egypt and support them to work with citizens and local government officials to find solutions to community challenges. It will also support local civil society organizations and political parties to strengthen women’s leadership in their work.
