Vicente Fox, the President of Mexico, received the National Endowment for Democracy's 2001 Annual Democracy Award. The NED Board of Directors chose to honor Fox in recognition of his historic election to Mexico's highest office, ending more than seven decades of single-party rule. NED views the honor as a tribute to the people of Mexico for the change they embraced by choosing a new path and working toward a more open and more democratic future for their country.

The National Endowment for Democracy (NED) presented its Democracy Service Medal to John Brademas, Fred Iklé, Richard Lugar and Stephen Solarz in recognition of their nine years of service on the NED Board of Directors, and for their outstanding contributions to the cause of democracy. The presentation took place at a reception held in the Mansfield Room of the U.S. Capitol.

The Endowment presented its 2000 Democracy Award to Veton Surroi, the editor and publisher of Koha Ditore, the most widely read Albanian language daily in Kosovo, and Natasa Kandic, head of the Belgrade-based human rights organization, the Humanitarian Law Center, which has been documenting human rights violations in Yugoslavia since 1992.
