Centre for Women in Governance (CEWIGO)

To improve the quality of women’s po­litical leadership in Uganda and expand media coverage of women candidates in preparation for the 2011 elections. CEWIGO will hold a training for jour­nalists on media coverage of women candidates and two skill building train­ings for newly elected women leaders.

Facilitation for Peace and Development (FAPAD)

To improve citizen participation in local governance at the parish and sub county level and to enhance awareness at the national level about governance issues in Northern Uganda. FAPAD will organize and train citizenship clubs in Amolatar District to ensure that community mem­bers play their civic roles effectively and to inform national level discussions about local governance issues in the North.

Foundation for Human Rights Initiative (FHRI)

To improve the freeness and fairness of the electoral process by reporting on the electoral process, including electoral reforms and media freedom, in 16 districts in Uganda. FHRI will also promote human rights by extending its human rights educa­tion program and debate competition to two additional universities, and by holding the 2nd Annual Human Rights Summer Course for human rights defenders in the region.

Global Rights Alert (GRA)

To improve respect for sexual minorities’ right to healthcare by sensitizing healthcare providers and engaging sexual minorities in efforts to change perceptions about their rights. GRA will also provide sexual minori­ties with information about their rights and LGBTI-friendly healthcare providers.

Integrated Women Development Programme (IWDP)

To improve public sector accountability to constituents in Kyenjojo and Kyegegwa Districts through trainings on budget docu­mentation transparency for four of its par­ish based associations (PBAs). IWDP will use theater to sensitize the public on trans­parency, corruption and election-related issues ahead of the 2011 national elections.

Mitano Development Foundation (MIDFO)

To improve transparency regarding dis­bursements and service delivery to Kanun­gu and Rukungiri Districts and strengthen the quality and frequency of women’s civic engagement. MIDFO will train 30 commu­nity monitors to promote dialogue between local leaders and citizens on issues of resource allocation and service delivery.

National Democratic Institute for International Affairs

To build upon its current Parliamentary Li­aison Staff (PLS) program, NDI will develop a new Parliamentary Call System (PCS) to enable constituents to communicate with their MPs through voice and text message. NDI also seeks to partner with research­ers from Columbia University to evaluate the PLS and PCS programs to determine best practices in bolstering communication between constituents and elected officials.

National Foundation for Democracy and Human Rights in Uganda (NAFODU)

To improve citizen understanding of democratic processes and human rights enhance civic engagement in southwestern Uganda. NAFODU will train community volunteers to provide civic education to their communities. The group will also air a one-hour monthly radio program on democracy and human rights.

Uganda Youth Network (UYONET)

To strengthen the capacity of civil so­ciety to manage and sustain youth ad­vocacy efforts at the district level and to create greater public awareness about youth issues at the national level. UYONET will host community meetings to help youth leaders develop national youth advocacy campaign strategies.
