Alliance for Poverty Eradication and Development (APED)

To build the capacity of local communities to manage and resolve issues around environmental degradation. APED will build the capacity of community based organizations (CBOs) and associations to advocate for the environmental rights of local communities and conduct activities that provide redress to local environmental degradation and non-adherence to environmental laws. APED will work with three CBOs as the primary beneficiaries and with a group of local farmers.
Center for International Private Enterprise (CIPE)

To empower grassroots private sector associations in major population areas to strengthen internal governance and participate in the development of democratic institutions. CIPE will support business associations to develop advocacy campaigns, build coalitions, and strengthen public-private dialogue with local government officials to empower grassroots private sector associations to strengthen their internal governance and to participate in the development of democratic institutions in the country.
Debebe and Temesgen Law Office (DTLO)

To improve the legal knowledge and working environment for media and CSOs and promote a stronger relationship between media and civil society organizations. DTLO will run 24 columns in local newspapers in Amharic promoting the positive role of CSOs and the media in Ethiopia’s social and economic development. DTLO will teach organizations and individuals the boundaries of the anti-terrorism law and provide legal advice on other new laws.
Ethiopian Red Terror Documentation and Research Center (ERTDRC)

To encourage a deeper understanding and wider dissemination of documents on the Dergue’s Red Terror. ERTDRC will professionally archive several million pages of documents left by the Dergue government. ERTDRC will establish a website that provides researchers with digitized access to records and generates domestic and international awareness of these atrocities. The project will engender an environment of national accountability in Ethiopian society and promote non-violent methods of resolving conflict.
Ketar Development Association (KDA)

To build the capacity of CBOs to advocate for development rights and educate people on how to improve their economic opportunities through new agricultural technologies. KDA will conduct a pair of two-day workshops to help local entrepreneurs shift their production paradigm from traditional economic activities and support the activities of three previously established business associations. KDA will hold a one-day community dialogue to advocate for the reduction of harmful traditional practices.
Research Center for Development and Education (RCDE)

To enhance prospects for community environmental action related to industrial waste in Gelan town and Akaki district of Oromia and the Yeka sub-city of Addis Ababa. RCDE will hold five trainings and one evaluation conference for community stakeholders on climate change, environmental degradation, pollution, and remediation strategies. RCDE will also establish plant nursery stations to improve community cohesion and quality of the environment through tree-planting projects.
Save Mothers and Children of Oromia (SMCO)
$36,855
To advance traditional democratic systems in order to strengthen women’s rights and those of their children by reinforcing the Siiqqee institution in Oromia. SMCO will conduct a series of trainings, awareness building seminars and community conversations for hundreds of women and community leaders in 15 localities in the Ada’a Barga district of Oromia. The project will generate a total of 360 village level meetings.
Vision Ethiopian Congress for Democracy (VECOD)
$23,768
To promote human rights and democracy in Addis Ababa through information, dissemination and training targeted at civil society leaders, local officials, and students. VECOD will conduct a workshop on human rights and another on democracy, organize two large, open-air forums in a local park and hold consultative meetings with various officials from Addis Ababa and its sub-cities.
