To promote worker rights by strengthen­ing civil society’s response to occupational health and safety concerns in the region. The Solidarity Center and its partners will build the capacity of Occupational Safety and Health activists, trade union­ists and NGOs to actively participate in advocacy initiatives and policy debates with other domestic, regional and interna­tional OSH advocates and partner unions.

To enhance the technical capacity of trade unions and worker rights advocates to use legal norms and channels to enforce core labor and human rights in the region. The program will sponsor innovative legal aid and law reform initiatives to advance worker rights in China, Thailand and among Burmese exiles and migrants, and will provide legal assistance to advocate for better conditions for migrant workers.

To strengthen the capacity of and coopera­tion among domestic election monitoring bodies in the Asia region. ANFREL will work closely with domestic election-monitoring groups to organize short and long-term observations of targeted elections. It also will organize workshops on election monitoring, voter education, election systems, and good governance.

Initiatives for International Dialogue

To build the capacity of civil society organi­zations and NGOs in Southeast Asia and to facilitate improved policies and civil society engagement in support of democratiza­tion in Burma. IID will conduct grassroots diplomacy and advocacy training for local and regional civil society organizations, internship exchange programs between the Philippines and other countries in Southeast Asia, and advocacy programs for democracy in Burma within ASEAN.

Reporters Without Borders/Reporters Sans Frontières

To build the capacity of journalists, blog­gers, and press freedom groups in East and Southeast Asia, and to raise inter­national and regional awareness of the media freedom situation in Southeast Asia. RSF will hold two capacity building train­ings – one in Southeast Asia for its local partners from Laos, Burma, and Viet­nam; and another for North Korea media groups in Seoul. RSF will also produce a report on media freedom in North Korea.
