IRI will work with political par­ties at the national and state level as they prepare for legislative elections with spe­cial emphasis on the state of Sarawak. IRI will also work with state leaders in Penang and Selangor to provide them with public opinion research, training and other re­sources to enable them to be more effec­tive representatives of their constituents.

To strengthen independent media in Malaysia. Mkini Dotcom Sdn Bhd will sup­port an online media outlet that provides professional and responsible coverage of issues and news often ignored or distorted by the mainstream media.

To encourage greater fairness in the electoral process and accountability in governance in Malaysia. NDI’s program will support ongoing parliamentary strengthening and electoral reform ef­forts. NDI will strengthen the ability of political parties and parliamentarians to be more effective legislators and bet­ter representatives of constituent con­cerns, and enhance the capacity of civil society to assess electoral redistricting efforts and advocate for reforms.

To promote human rights in Malaysia. Suaram will organize human rights campaigns on the issues of the Internal Se­curity Act, the right to trial, refugees, and migrant workers. Suaram will also continue to issue its annual survey and evaluation of the human rights situation in Malaysia.
