ARHITEL will produce and distribute two 30-minute-long documentary films analyzing the rise of independent media after the fall of Communism, as well as the role of the media during the conflicts of the 1990s. The films will be broadcast on regional and national television stations.

Association of Independent Electronic Media (ANEM)

To produce a series of television programs aimed at increasing the accountability of local government officials. ANEM will produce 20 weekly episodes of a program entitled “Mirror of Power,” which will investigate cases of corruption, conflict of interest, misuse of political power, and failure to respond to citizens’concerns. The series will be broadcast by 25 local television stations, which are members of the ANEM network.

Association of Local Independent Media “Local Press”

To open a debate on challenges facing Serbia’s democratic transition at the local level. On the 10th anniversary of the breakthrough events of 2000, members of Local Press will produce, exchange, and publish 17 articles, organize a public roundtable, and produce a television program to help to fill a void in information regarding the economic, social, and political changes occurring in post-Milosevic Serbia.

To continue promoting freedom of expression and respect for diversity and human rights in southern Serbia. To advance tolerance and diversity, foster freedom of expression, and limit extreme nationalism, Endowment funding will be used to cover the operating costs of the organization’s Alternative Cultural Center, which will host a series of related discussion panels, roundtables, exhibits, and workshops.

E-Novine

To promote higher professional and ethical standards of journalism in Serbia and the region. E-Novine staff and associate journalists will produce approximately 15 analytical pieces a month for the online news daily www.e-novine.com to raise awareness about the role media played during the wars of the 1990s, as well as encourage public debate about the current media situation in the region.

Fund B92

To continue promoting human rights awareness among the people of Serbia. Fund B92 will organize the sixth annual Free Zone festival, a series of public events including film screenings, discussions, lectures, and exhibitions aimed at raising human rights awareness. Endowment funding will be used to partially cover organizing costs associated with the six-day film festival in Belgrade and its traveling tour through Serbia.

To continue encouraging public debate on the most important social, political and economic topics related to Serbia’s democratic transition. As a part of its popular multimedia program, which provides a forum for open discussion by prominent policy makers, civic and political leaders, journalists, and academics, Hourglass will use NED funds to continue producing the interactive political e-magazine www.pescanik.net.

Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS)

To continue fostering investigative reporting in Serbia. Through its Center for Investigative Reporting (CINS), NUNS will organize a 12-week investigative journalism seminar for 30 young journalists and an internship for a selected group of ten. The best five students will receive a stipend to produce investigative reports.

Independent Journalists’ Association of Vojvodina (NDNV)

To continue providing a forum for public dialogue on the most important social, political and economic issues facing Serbia’s northern province of Vojvodina. NDNV will organize four panels to discuss important developments affecting Vojvodina and hold a training seminar for journalists and editors reporting on these issues. NDNV will redesign and upgrade its website www.autonomija.info, an important news source and forum for open debate.

To continue the development and promotion of a groundbreaking website that fosters the accountability of public officials in Serbia. The Istinomer serves as a comprehensive political fact-checking database, providing nonpartisan information on public officials’ statements. The interactive website www.istinome.rs also features columns by recognized political experts and analysts, as well as visitor discussion forums.

To promote democratic values and encourage public debate on the achievements of and challenges to democracy in Serbia. LiNet will produce and promote a documentary film on the last ten years of Serbia’s democratic transition. The documentary, to be shown on television stations and Internet sites, will analyze the economic, social, and political changes occurring in post-Milosevic Serbia.

To continue promoting democratic values and encouraging public debate among citizens of central Serbia on the most important social, political and economic topics related to the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration. Millennium will produce a series of 13 televised public debates, which provide a forum for open discussion by prominent policy makers, civic and political leaders, journalists, and academics before a live studio audience.

National Coalition for Decentralization

To advance the process of decentralization in Serbia by building public support for local government reform among citizens, NGOs, government representatives and the media. The Coalition will organize a multimedia campaign tour that will visit 12 cities in southern Serbia, facilitating direct communication between citizens and their elected representatives.

NIP Vranjske

To investigate, produce, and publish a series of 24 in-depth articles addressing key political, social, and economic issues relevant to all ethnic communities in southern Serbia. By offering high-quality, balanced, up-to-date information of common interest to all citizens, Vranjske Novine will continue to foster dialogue and build trust between the Serbian and Albanian communities in the region.

Resource Centre Leskovac

To continue a program that is building the skills of student activists in southern Serbia and enabling them to play a more significant role in advocating for human rights and youth related issues. The project will be implemented in the two southern districts of Jablanica and Pcinja, and will consist of 35 trainings, meetings, and high school debates, complemented by a monthly publication.

Youth Initiative for Human Rights (YIHR) – Serbia

To continue involving youth in the process of Serbia’s democratic transition by strengthening the skills of young decision-makers and activists committed to supporting democratic values, protecting human rights, and dealing with the recent past. The YIHR will organize two advanced seminars to prepare its policy school alumni and activists to organize 10 local campaigns marking the most important dates in the region’s recent history.

Zajecar Initiative

To continue promoting youth activism in eastern Serbia by strengthening high school parliaments and youth NGOs, enabling them to play a more significant role in advocating for youth related issues. The Initiative will organize trainings to assist young people in becoming more engaged in their communities, facilitate youth advocacy campaigns, and award small grants of up to $3,000 to approximately five youth organizations in the Timok region.
